Jack Newnes
As reported on the AFL website,
CARLTON is eyeing a play to land St Kilda's Jack Newnes for free after the midfielder was left without a contract following Wednesday's trade deadline.
A restricted free agent entering the off-season, Newnes had previously turned down a two-year offer from the Saints to explore his options on the open market.
After there were no takers as a free agent, Newnes is considering entering the delisted free agency window, with Carlton a chance to swoop on his services for nothing.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
Re: Jack Newnes
I'm quite sad, Jack Newnes is actually a decent player and well ahead of some others on the list...

Re: Jack Newnes
Have they changed the rules?
It is meant to be that if a player has been offered a contract that he cannot go as an DFA.
Newnes was offered a contract. Or at least I thought that he was reported to have been.
RFA means compensation if the contract value is high enough $$ times years.
Though I guess if both years and $ are low then it may not have generated a compensation pick anyway.

Re: Jack Newnes
He’s better than a few young players that probably need delisting.
But Jill has played over 150 games and still gives most of
Us the shytes
We offered him a very low contract which is what he’s worth. A bag of chips and a coke

Re: Jack Newnes
Someone explain this for me.
What’s stopping a Tom Lynch for example not accepting RFA... getting himself delisted and then the Tigers picking him up so no compensation goes to the Suns?
This would be unlikely as players like to look after their previous clubs but surely this loophole is closed somehow...?

It sounds like the offer is now off the table.

The good news just keeps getting better!
How great would it be if they missed out on Papley and Martin but landed Newnes?
Please Jesus let it be true!!

Re: Jack Newnes
He turned down the contract and was told not to come Monday after the trade period? Will be damaging at the Northern Blues.

Re: Jack Newnes
Jack Newnes. Enigmatic to say the least.
Started with a hiss and a roar then his form dropped away completely.
Richo showed great faith in him. Far too much in my view. Should have been dropped well before he finally was.
If he can kick-start his AFL career at Carlton. Good luck to him.
Sadly, we've recruited far better players than him who play in his position.
That is the reality.

I reckon he was the victim of limitless faith.damienc wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 9:15am Jack Newnes. Enigmatic to say the least.

Instead of being dropped and being forced to work on the things he could be better at... reckon he was given a licence to cruise and it showed

Re: Jack Newnes
Can we, should we pick up Martin ?
Carlton are going to apparently but if they take Newnes, can we then get Martin.
I'm not sure how it works - is there a selection order ?

Re: Jack Newnes
The view Jack was a coach favourite and was shown limitless faith is a misguided one in my opinion. Yes he tapered in his last couple of years with comparison to his peak in 2016-17, it happens, but the claim that he was somehow gifted games fails to reflect on the list of players available for selection each week throughout the 2018-19 seasons. Simply who was pushing Jack out of the team when most weeks the only available players where either not like-for-like or just weren't AFL ready and where many of the games over that period where Jack was used to fill gaps. At his best many were suggesting he was Captain material. It's just astounding he has attracted such vitriol by a very small supporter type, I suspect it is partly due to the vitriol packaged up for Richo by the same supporter type and not really breaking down the situation objectively.

Re: Jack Newnes
Pretty good statistics for a RFA too. For some reason no one wanted to match the contract he is wasn't willing to take.saynta wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 11:30am ack Newnes

Re: Jack Newnes
His two greatest legacies as a footballer are that he played 120+ consecutive games of the probably the most underwhelming football in the history of the game, and that someone once bothered to post a post, as long as the one above, in his defence.Secret Kiel wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 11:23am The view Jack was a coach favourite and was shown limitless faith is a misguided one in my opinion.
