Questions re the existing players
Five ready made players stepping into the side.
Does Josh Battle go back to the forward line?
Do players like Dunstan and Sinclair struggle for a spot in the side?
Does Nathan Brown get delisted?
Does Jack Newnes get delisted or is he under contract?
Is Rohan Marshall going to be spending time up forward?
Does Butler put pressure on Lonie or Kent?
Is Max King ready to take a key position or is Membrey now the main main up forward?

Re: Questions re the existing players
I hope they keep Brown for 1 more year, they can't yet rely on Austin or Clavarino to play key back if Howard or Carlisle are out injured.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Wed 16 Oct 2019 8:38pm Five ready made players stepping into the side.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Good questions, I reckon round 1 if fully fit looks like this.Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Wed 16 Oct 2019 8:38pm Five ready made players stepping into the side.

Not what I’d like to see.
Geary Howard Savage
Clark Carslile Roberton
Hill Hannebery Jones
Billings Marshall Gresham
Lonie King Membrey
Ryder Steele Ross
Int: Wilkie Long Battle Coffield
EMG: Butler Dunstan Webster Paton Hind Newnes Parker
Plenty of competition for small/ medium forwards with Billings & Gresham the locks and a choice of Lonie, Parker, Butler, Long etc

Re: Questions re the existing players
Why is our #1 ruckman, and RU best and fairest not playing in the ruck?
Re: Questions re the existing players
From as much as we can say at this stage (!), that starting 22 sounds good. Perhaps Butler in for Long. Depending on how fit and ready King and Roberton are, starting 18 could include Battle and Willie.

Re: Questions re the existing players
I'd have Lonie and Kent playing at Sandringham.
Did no-one watch Lonie's last game against Sydney?
After the game Ratten talked about the poor skills and no doubt Lonie would have been at the forefront of his mind.
Hence the recruitment of Butler.
Small forwards
Gresham
Long
Parker
then Butler
with Lonie and Kent not in the script and not in the best 32.
I was disappointed they did not let Lonie go last year.
The recruitment of Kent for three years is an obvious mistake.

Re: Questions re the existing players
Lonie will have to play well to hold his spot, but on current form is ahead of all other small forwards (Gresham aside, who is a mid/fwd)
My order on last years output would be
Lonie, Kent, Hind, Parker, Long, Butler, Young
With Gresham rotating
That order could easily change with form

Re: Questions re the existing players
The thing I like a about Butler coming in is he hopefully creates real mentoring and leadership to our forwards (small & Big) as well as good ole I.P. from Richmond. I suspect he'll do this whether he's putting pressure on our current small forward players for their spot while playing at Sandy or he's made the best 22 it and forcing them to work their way back in. Either way I really think he's a massive asset, and soooooooo cheap.B.M wrote: ↑Wed 16 Oct 2019 9:36pm Lonie will have to play well to hold his spot, but on current form is ahead of all other small forwards (Gresham aside, who is a mid/fwd)

Ben Long will be an absolute star.
Potentially elite.
Definitely not enough love on here for him at this stage.
I think anyone who has Lonie ahead of Long is channeling Forest Gump!

I like that team but prefer Hind's use of speed to Long's chaos.
Savage would be on the bench with Wilkie in the back pocket.

Wait a minute... I'm a massive B Long fan, and have argued giving him captaincy would improve his consistency and bring the whole club a bit of the so-called X-factor and some grit.
Bearing in mind.... I get caned whenever I point out how f88kin' good that kid will be as a footballer. I'd have him on a wing: Hill on one wing, Long or Clark on the other.

Re: Questions re the existing players
Maybe the immediate question for the retained is how do we organize a farewell/farewells for the dearly traded/recently beloved. We don't just trade and abandon do we: "leave your locker key at reception" (?) The chaps on pending extensions and one year-to-go contracts need reassuring hugs and J. Newnes a nice card about how to be grateful for little things. At the function BR can say who is in the running for CHF to help out super coaches - Battle has to be back in the frame with all of Austin, Howard and Carslisle available doesn't he; but maybe not.

If you listened to his radio interview, after being traded to the Saints, he sounded very positive and upbeat and happy to be playing for St Kilda and with his cousin Brad Hill.
Of course you might expect him to sound like that moving to a new club.
But it might give Paddy a new lease of life. Let's hope so. You don't make AA if you're a dud.
