I went to a leadership conference recently and there was a group of sports management people there... people that worked with scouts from the AFL, NRL, NFL, Cricket, NBA, Premier league etc
The question was posed to them by what can only assume was an avid sports fan: what's the number 1 quality you look for in a young talent that you're looking to recruit.
Around the table, person to person they all answered the same thing.
Anyone want to wager a guess?
Skill?
Work rate?
Attitude?
Leadership?

First thing they see with their eyes would be the skill of the athlete
I'd say after they take notice of the skills they'd want to see on field leadership and they'd want to talk to the person to understand if they are a natural born leader
So imo it has to be skills first and leadership second
