AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
Sure, everyone has no sympathy for Essendon losing. Fair enough. But when a rule is put into disrepute and the AFL can't grow a pair and take action after an obvious missed call by the umpires, then I'm not impressed.
I speak of course of the incident where Dean Rampe starts to climb the goal post, like a chimpanzee, whilst Myers for Essendon is taking the shot for goal after the siren. Before you say this isn't Saints related, I'll say this: let's cast out minds back to the 2005 PF, where Barry Hall punched Goose in the guts and still got to play in the GF the following week.
This blatant favouritism for the Swines continues to this very day. It's quite sickening!

Would have been ridiculous to pay that, had no effect on the outcome.

Worth it to see stringer sulking.
Pretty sure the rule is about deliberately shaking the post, where as climbing the post is just stupid.

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
The post did actually shake from Rampe jumping on it. It should be worthy of penalising. Okay, the umpires' decision is final and they're only human and yada-yada-yada, but the AFL could at least grow a pair to admit that they missed the call.
Otherwise, what is the point of even having this rule?

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
yeah the rule
its there to stop players from making the post sway in and out - which may have been more a problem in the old days of wooden posts buried a few feet into muddy turf
Its pretty stupid to try and attempt anyway as it will be equally wider and narrower - but anyhoo
Its funny because when I opened this thread my mind immediately started thinking if there was a decision against swans and IF EFC kicked the goal
The same thread title would have covered those that think EFC is an AFL lovechild...

Sirengate anyone?!
AFL should take the four points off them.
But, it's Essendon so who gives a stuff.

Yeah suck shite Essenscum Bummers
On another point of new irrelevance if defenders can now run the ball out of the square after a point why is there still a goal square marked out? Isn’t it obsolete now?

Geez. If a team lost a game because someone climbed the post for an 85m kick that was at least 10m short, then we may as well give up and go watch another sport.

Remind me, what was the outcome when a young Stewart Loewe shook the goal post, in similar circumstances, in the late '80s?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall him being suspended for a week. What year was that? I reckon it may have been in 1986 (Stewie's rookie year).Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Sun 12 May 2019 12:22am Remind me, what was the outcome when a young Stewart Loewe shook the goal post, in similar circumstances, in the late '80s?

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
AFL changed the long standing rule the next day.
Cost us the double chance and a realistic premiership chance.
A retrospective decision without precedent or integrity.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
The decision was wrong, but that makes it all the better because it was S & Dung on the losing end.
Knowing that the S & Dung supporters will be upset is very pleasing.

I'm glad you posted this. My memory is that he was suspended for a week. The discussion around at the time was that everybody should know the rules.Sainternist wrote: ↑Sun 12 May 2019 1:22amCorrect me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall him being suspended for a week. I am still hurting from 71;
my gut churns thinking of 97;
2009 was agony,
2010a was a pleasure to watch only to be devastated by 2010 b.
It hurts barracking for the Saints

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
What a joke when the CEO says "technically its the rule but common sense seems to have been done and comparing it to a guy on the mark"
Like at the police seeing someone speeding in a empty street and winding down the window saying slow down and driving off.
it's either a rule or it's not.

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
It was a free kick, and anyone who says otherwise is a drop kick. "Technicalities" are what the rules of all games are about. This particular rule has been around since the beginning, so it's not a "new innovation" as Peter Landy was want to say.

If every technicality was paid there’d be 100 frees a game.

Re: AFL Lets its Favourite Lovechild Off the Hook, Again!
In this case I disagree - what Rampe did was not a mistake, not an error - it was a direct thumbing of your nose at the rules - like when you have warned a child not to touch something and they do so again - while looking you in the eye! He should have been punished for the simple stupidity of the act.
If he had slipped and tripped someone over, or fallen into the post - then I would take 'common sense' - but this was a flagrant disregard - FU to the AFL! Had to be stopped! I would expect that kind of stupidity from a 10yo not an AFL football player.

This coming from a bloke who sooked when a free was paid against us when our defender put one arm around the WCE players body and held onto his other arm as well
You have zero credibility when it comes to umpiring, best leave this one alone!

Speaking of Lovechilds, the happy clapper chequebook has been let off for the second week in a row.

Can't wait for our chance to boo him.

Pretty sure Stewie Loewe got fined many years ago for shaking the goal post. I don't think climbing it is the same thing.
