There is a 3 hour video of Tony Lockett's career at Saints now online.

Growing up with Tony Lockett at the Saints was one of the highlights of my youth.

How I wish we could return to those days when footy was fun and exciting.
Everytime we went forward everyone would be yelling "Where's Plugger" and excitement levels went through the roof as his brilliance shone through.

Oh my goodness I saw half of it last night he was my hero I will never ever have a player thrill me anywhere near the way Plugger did....
He is the greatest I have said that many times on this forum and nothing will ever change my mind....
What frustrates the hell out of me was his peak of 1988-1994 he only played 50%-6O% of the matches just about and he hardly played finals.
All the others that get picked in the all time lists got to play at their peak in Grand Finals regularly.
Will watch the 2 nd half tonight...
1989 was his absolute zenith....

Some people say they can remember where they were and exactly what they were doing when man landed on the moon , kennedy was assasinated etc...I still remember vividly Brian Taylor on 3aw saying Plugger would not be playing with StKilda again. Bitter and twisted ever since. Would go from end to end to watch the guy. Changed the way I viewed footy.

Plugger was probably my greatest footy memories as well right from that opening round of 1983 out at Arden street.
He played in the reserves that day but you could already have an idea what we had.
The atmosphere at Moorabbin in those years 1987 to 1992 was incredible as we really did believ he was unstoppable.
When you consider he was very often not fully fit can you imagine how good he could have been if he had been as fit as Stewie Loewe!
I recently watched a replay of the 1991 final against Geelong where he inexplicably missed three sitters in the first quarter but still went on to kick 9! Unfortunately we lost by a few points.

He also had an aggressive side to him which was a strength and weakness.
His suspension in 1989 when he hit Guy McKenna cost us finals and him the the AFL all time record of goals in a season.
Having a look at this video please look at 23.25 against Essendon when he elbowed Gary ODonnell, I have never seen that before and lucky he didn’t get weeks for that.
His peak powers were 1987-1991.
Personally I think his best ever game was against Hawthorn in 1988 at the MCG n 1988 when he kicked 9.7 on Langford.
He also played a game against Collingwood at Moorabbin in 1987 the second last round that had to be seen to be believed, there is some vision of this on the highlights which I hadn’t seen before.
That game got him the 3 Brownlow votes that enabled him to tie with Platten.

For memory Collingwood kicked the first 7 goals that day and then we kicked the next 15 and won by plenty.

Firstly forgot to thank you Jaxons for posting this I am a Plugger Tragic as mentioned he was on my wall growing up with King Kenny Dalglish my other sporting hero of Liverpool Fc fame.
You are right 1987-1991 was his peak, spot on there because 1992 whilst he kicked over a 100 & we played finals he dropped off a small bit in athleticism with his constant injuries taking a toll on his heavy frame. I cannot tell you the what ifs discussions I have had about him not playing in his peak era enough and 1989 at 23 years of age I believe was his absolute zenith he would have scored 170 goals if he played every game plus finals. How many times did Dunstall play 22 home and away games and 3 odd finals? Plugger Never did!!
The elbow to Mckenna cost him the all time goal scoring record for a season and I believe his fitness several times cost him the Fred Fanning record of 18 goals in a game he just ran out of steam a few times after half time. He should have achieved all those records not just the all time goal scoring record.
You are also spot on about our club not being strong enough to manage him. Our 2 greatest players both left us in Plugger and Stewart.
Watching the old football it hit me being now acclimatized to modern football how many times full backs used to belt them on the back or side of the head and Plugger couldnt handle it he just would not cop the punishment & he did have a short wick.

The 1987 game against Collingwood was the day Brian Taylor lost his head against Mark Gamble I believe.
I was there that day but for some reason doesnt stand in my memory as his greatest day but i accept your opinion on that.
I do remember the body language between Millane and Plugger that day both 2 bulls with their chests out most wouldnt stand up to Plugger but Millane eye balled him a few times that day just to show him he was not afraid.

Games I remember being his greatest there are several:
Agreed the Saints v Hawks MCG 1988 game is right up there.
Saints v Demons MCG 1987 - Plugger kicks 10 out of 12 goals the ball only came down 20 odd times.
Saints v Carlton Moorabin 1989- 10.7 against Silvagni- just extraordinary.
Saints v Cats 1991 elimination final- 9 goals he just was unplayable.

Best ever performance was a practice match i think in 1987 versus Brisbane Bears & he stood on Martin Leslie's head (touted as the best full back out of the VFL).
He had the blonde tipped mullet it was a stinking hot day and he made me so happy that i went down to watch a practice match.

I remember seeing his manager telling the press Tony was going to leave, I was still hoping he would change his mind. I'd love to see him involved with the club. Anyway best St Kilda player I have ever seen.

Vazelos, the game v Melbourne in 1987 he actually kicked 12.3 out of 14 which at the time was most goals kicked in a losing side (48 point defeat) Ablett snr broke that record in 1993 when he kicked 14 in a losing team v Bummers

Plugger kicked 898 goals for the Saints...half of them must be on these highlights.
