Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
Has this been confirmed yet?
When does the club make a decision?
Personally I have no dramas if Geary is skipper next year, but I would like to see Seb Ross take over from 2020.
It will probably happen, but Dan Hannerbrey has to be thrown in as a new VC too. We need a new leader or two in there. If he was a VC at the Swans then he is qualified to be one at the Saints.

Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

It will be interesting to see who gets the nod. Personally I think Geary is well and truly best 22 so I'm not fussed about that. The question is, is he a leader that demands the highest standards?
All this talk that we need to improve our leadership on the field, and that our training standards haven't been high enough, suggests to me Gears might not be the man for the job. Wouldn't mind seeing Hannebery given a crack as he seems to be very vocal, would also represent a fresh change. The fact is if he's fit enough then he becomes our best player pretty much straight away.
Anyway, will be interesting when the time comes...

If the coaches think that Geary did not do a good job as the sole captain then don't be pissweak and don't leave it up to the players and don't pussy foot around for another 12 months...make a change. Or...why not leave it open and then decide by about mid season.
Why should St Kilda conform to the traditional time line of appointing a captain and why do we need to have just a sole captain anyway? I think it'll be good to rotate the mouthpieces at press conferences and changing up who tosses the coin each week. The symbolism and the opportunity to be the main man or the leader of the troops can only be positive for the growth of the individuals and the team imo. Hell!! We're a progressive club aren't we?
One thing is for sure...after about round 6 or 7 the guys who have had a go at leading the team will be walking into a meeting room and they'll nod their heads..and greet each other something like this...

I’m hoping it’s Hanners.
I want everything shook to it’s core and life for our temp coach The Alan to be as difficult and challenging as possible.

Re: Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
I am trying to picture who is more charismatic and a better media performer ( tossing skills not considered because I don't think the captain has to toss anymore, a joe/Josephine from the public does it and then the opposition captain points east or west; but at the same time the captain needs to clearly show he gives a toss). Seb Ross is quite good on camera and comes across as a humble nice guy which is good for the image. Steele is also a good media performer and towards the end of last year showed he was not to be trifled with; he possibly needs another year to build up street cred - looks to have excellent potential, perhaps VC. Other than that no real challengers come to mind, noting Hannebury is yet to play a comp game for us. I imagine it will be Jarryn again unless he declines with someone in PR suggesting he stop appearing to be so damn nice, balanced and gentlemanly - get phony mean and angry the urgers might say.

Re: Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
Only the club and players will know what kind of job Geary was doing, but the overall team performance was as bad as it can be. I'd be keen to see a change. Ideally someone like Seb Ross with Hannebury helpling him out.
The big issue with Geary for me is that there are times where he really should be dropped. He probably deserves to be picked most games, but not every game.

Always wondered why the players vote on this incredibly important decision like they're still in high school. Surely the coaches should be making this decision? For some players would be a popularity contest and for others, they wouldn't have the maturity and experience to really know.
I personally reckon we went out of our way to Get Hannerberry, make him captain and see if the others will follow. God knows they're not following Geary. Gear's is probably a ripping bloke but it hasn't worked. Move on

The Captaincy should go to a stalwart, not some player waltzing in from another club with (currently) no long term connection or commitment.
It has to be earned, not given.

Agree Enrico, although I am sure this stuff surfaced in another thread a few months ago where there was a bit of a push in the hope of removing Geary as captain. I think it would be a surprise if he was voted out by the players 2019.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Thu 06 Dec 2018 11:36pm The Captaincy should go to a stalwart, not some player waltzing in from another club with (currently) no long term connection or commitment.

Re: Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
Giving players the right to select their team captain is certainly not "best practice" - you don't get soldiers deciding who should lead them into battle, nor should it be a popularity contest. Leadership is about making tough decisions, and in a team sport it should be a player who commands respect, possesses the skills to lead by example and can inspire his team to ultimate victory.Moods wrote: ↑Thu 06 Dec 2018 10:43pmAlways wondered why the players vote on this incredibly important decision like they're still in high school. In recent years neither Robert Harvey, nor Lenny Hayes, both terrific players, were ever made captain and I expect that both probably felt that this was not something they aspired to.
I will be really disappointed if Geary stays on as captain in 2019, especially as he has been quoted as saying that he didn't really want the job and does not relish it.
Seb Ross looks to me most likely to be the next Saints skipper, he is a top 5 Saint and has demonstrated poise and confidence in the media.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Re: Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
Yep, Banger captained and so did Lendog before GT decided the best thing for our long term success was to help the younger guys share and rotate the captaincy. They were both selfless leaders ( and I reckon for most of the Lyon years Lenny was our spiritual leader even thogh Rooy was captain). Lenny should've probably captained for much longer stints, but I believe both he and Banger did what their coaches wanted and what the club demanded
In hindsight, I think Lenny should have taken over from Roo when Maddy was first diagnosed. Not sure if it would have made any difference in 2010, but perhaps we wouldn't have had such a rapid decline if a different captain was in charge in 2011 and up until Lenny Hayes retired. Another lesson to be learned imo.

The 'BO' would have been my choice, prior to health issues of course. Probably behind the pack and just needs some games now though

Re: Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
I know that as a supporter, Gears occasional turnovers by foot, or handballing to someones feet can be quite demoralising. I wonder if this has the same effect on the players, or does his impact in other areas override this?
At what point do the negatives outweigh the positives?
If Hannebury has been as influential as reports suggest, and if that continues I would like to see him made Co-Captain. But the season is a long way off yet.

Re: Geary still skipper for 2019? Hannebery VC?
If players vote it needs to be only one part of the process and a secret ballot. As much as I admire J. Geary it would be a sign we have not developed anyone if he gets the gig again. Jarryn's personal form has not benefitted from the leader's role. Seb Ross would be better I think with Slater and Hannebury mentoring him. I also think Jade has potential as a captain once he has had a year in the middle; and J. Steele. In the current on field arrangements doesn't each group have a leader anyway? However I take it from Ted's comments it has been decided and one back position is locked in.
