St Kilda are the laughing stock of the AFL
Blind Freddie can see we are screaming out for midfield class. What do we do? We draft a 204 cm bean pole with a bung knee. Mark my words, even though I have taken great delight smashing Carlton and watching them win spoon after spoon lately, they are now miles ahead of us. In fact, I can see them winning their 17th flag in the next 5 years while we are still waiting for McCartin to come good.
NeXus Nick is back but where is Joffaboy????

We have a fascination for tall forwards - hopefully we will realise at some point that you need quality inside 50 entries to make it work.
I think Max King will be hoping for that too.

More insight from the List Manager.
"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....

It will take at least 2 years ie he may play a game or two next year but 2020 he should start getting picked more consistently. Now get some miss with later picks, no hbf that may one day become minds and next years pick we use on best outside mid.
We are in a rebuild again as paddy Goddard bookends failed so give it time

As long as we cut the coach some slack, seeing we're in a rebuild ...
re: "Next year's pick we will use on the best mid' ... I think we've heard that one before - but will there be someone as elite-skilled, quick, disciplined and super-fit as Bailey Smith available?

I think it is time that the Saints swap their pokies for a full on Casino.
We are kings of the gamble.
It will either pay off BIG time or be a complete disaster. Of course once we have put years of development into him and he meets his potential he will walk out on free agency (by then Sydney will need another poster boy forward).

There's no guarantee that any new young recruit will meet expectations- we need to give it time. No good having class midfielders who kick to the forwards who get outmarked by the opposition. There is just as much case for getting class in the midfield as there is getting a quality big forward.

"His ability to pick up the ball from the ground at his size has not been seen in the AFL before"
lets hope it is true. My thoughts would be that it hasnt been seen before as once the big guy has put on enough weight to match AFL strength standards his centre of gravity would rise and negate this perceived strength (like most other ruckman).
Lets hope he works out.

We already have enough big, strong forwards who can take strong marks - Marshall, McCartin , Battle - even Membrey.
What we don't have is elite-skilled midfielders to deliver it lace-out to them on a consistent basis. We need quality entries.
The indiscriminate bombing into the forward line was not a flawed/misguided coaching idea - it was due to our poor kicking skills.
Which one of our genuine midfielders is an elite kick?

This is the key. Getting actual mids that can kick. Not hbf as per usualDJ Higgins wrote: ↑Fri 23 Nov 2018 9:00am It will take at least 2 years ie he may play a game or two next year but 2020 he should start getting picked more consistently. Just go and have a look at the new Moorabbin. Construction on phase 1 and 2 are pretty much complete as of last week.
Then you can make up your mind where we sit.

Troll Central.
Posters that have admitted they were wrong about Hanna's gastro and the club didn't create a cover story.

Re: St Kilda are the laughing stock of the AFL
I think the comp would've laughed at us if we didn't pick up a player who was widely considered to be worthy of a top pick. It's delicious to think that within two years there's every chance that we'll get Ben off the Suns.
Regarding midfield class, I would say that these blokes on our list have the potential to become that class we need in the middle; Clark, Coffield, Phillips, Acres, Billings, Gresh
IF these blokes fire up and compliment Steven, Ross, Steele, and Hannebery, then bloody look out I say!

That they might start going up the ladder higher than us?
Or we are waiting for paddy to come good?
That we need real AA kids?
Surely it can't be the race for a GF - our record and theirs would indicate that would be a bad bet
Any input?

If vs Bailey Smif - elite on both sides of his body, quick, genuine mid.
Max King looks like a champ, anyway ... so let's see how it pans out.
It's just that from what our team needs and lacks persepctive - we really, really needed an elite-skilled midfielder as a starting point. The best teams probably have 3 or 4.

Unfortunately this is we're at. No class fwds and very few class mids. So what to do? Pick the best of either category which comes up first. I'm very happy with the selection. Disappointed that things didn't work out with Hugh and disappointed so far with Patty, but we push on. Hopefully snag a quality mid later in draft.

Not sure why posters are hanging their hat on the brother coming from the suns to the saints. It wasn't a 2 for 1 deal FFS. He hasn't even got there yet and already he is coming to the saints. So that implies clever recruiting does it? Lets work with picking some good midfielders from the picks we have left and then we will see how good our recruiters really are.outside66 wrote: ↑Fri 23 Nov 2018 10:29am I think the comp would've laughed at us if we didn't pick up a player who was widely considered to be worthy of a top pick. "“One of the most special tall forwards in years.”
That’s the calibre of player the Saints have drafted in young spearhead Max King, according to Jay Clark of the Herald Sun.
St Kilda used its prized pick No. 4 to pounce on the supreme talent at the 2018 NAB AFL National Draft on Thursday night.
A product of the Sandringham Dragons, King boasts a rare mix of height, athleticism and elite skill, traits that have had recruiters salivating for more than two years.
The agile 204cm giant was widely touted as the likely No. 1 pick after his bottom-age year at level, talk that went into overdrive following the opening round of the TAC Cup this year."

Re: St Kilda are the laughing stock of the AFL
We would have been a laughing stock had we not taken this kid, who many rate the best in the draft.
He’s athletic, runs like Riewoldt and is a giant with freakish attributes. It would have been like Richmond missing Franklin & Roughead, for what? Bayley Smith or Rozee? Smith and insider and half back. Sound familiar?
The kid’s a beast.
