Trio of Saints assistants to leave the club
ST KILDA has informed three assistant coaches they will not be required for 2019 as the club prepares for sweeping changes in its football department.
Simon McPhee (senior midfield assistant), Rohan Welsh (senior forward assistant) and Lindsay Gilbee (defensive assistant) have been told to look for new jobs next season.

Re: Trio of Saints assistants to leave the club
I believe all assistants had to be told by 1st August if they were not required for 2019.
So unless they are keeping it quiet for some reason, then that may be it.

A few mid-level scapegoats to keep the heat off Sexton, Kingsley, Richo, Finnis & Summers.

no. it was a guideline only, from the coaches association.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 7:39pmI believe all assistants had to be told by 1st August if they were not required for 2019.

Not enforceable, purely a suggestion so that assistants would have enuff time to look around.
The head of the AFLCA said so.

Re: Trio of Saints assistants to leave the club
So how do teams go when some of the assistants will be leaving? How do the sacked cope at work and o match day? A bit silly really.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Re: Trio of Saints assistants to leave the club
All these coaches...and we still kick it to their spare defender most of the time.
I wonder how we would go if the players themselves organized the game plan.
Would it really be any worse?

Re: Trio of Saints assistants to leave the club
If you got someone like B.Goddard in the backline you could get rid of the backline coaches and save some money....but this club is about wasting money on heaps of coaches and employing mates on very good pay rates instead of thinking out of the box. I believe David Parkin gave players a license at Carlton when they won a flag, he selected 75% of the team though, the game plan could be changed by his team leaders as they saw fit during a game. But you need some smart players to organise this ......and he had them.

Re: Trio of Saints assistants to leave the club
I have argued long and hard that Danny Sexton most definitely has to go if the club is serious about changing the downward direction of the Saints. Just to reiterate: Sexton was drafted by North Melbourne with pick 11 in 1990 but never actually played a game in the seniors, so he has no experience of playing at the elite level.Doctor Two wrote: ↑Wed 01 Aug 2018 8:53pm So Sexton survives?

Will he stay or go?
Following is a quote from a 2006 VFL press release:
The TAC Cup is proving to be a great launching pad for future AFL coaches as well as players, with 2006 Northern Knights coach Danny Sexton accepting a position with St Kilda Football Club.
Sexton, who led the Knights to a narrow Preliminary Final loss in his one season at the helm, will be a Development Coach with the Saints.
Before this year he spent two seasons with the Calder as an assistant to Robert Hyde, which included a premiership in 2004.
Sexton also coached the Cannons’ under-16 team and has been a vital component in the Knights’ involvement in the very successful VET football program at Essendon-Keilor Secondary College.
Sexton’s playing career included stints with AFL clubs North Melbourne and Fitzroy before he joined Port Melbourne in the VFA, where he spent seven years.
The latter sentence conveniently omits to mention that he never played in the senior side for either club.
In 2015 St Kilda issued a press release quoting Sexton, as follows:
NEW Director of Coaching Danny Sexton has been at St Kilda since 2006 and is as optimistic about the future as he has ever been.
From development to opposition analysis to line coaching, Sexton’s recent promotion was one of a raft of off field changes at the end of 2014 that has the club well positioned to make an assault up the ladder, according to the 40-year-old.
“The good thing about our club at the moment is that we are probably following a bit of a Hawthorn model in terms of the pathway of the coaches coming in,” Sexton said.
“A lot are coming through the talent pathways, which is great for the VFL and TAC Cup. It’s good to have some freshness coming through.”
Well, so much for the optimism from the club's Director of Coaching four seasons ago, because unlike Hawthorn the team is back to rock bottom.
I maintain that Sexton should take full responsibility for the team's appalling demise in 2018, and I will be bitterly disappointed if senior management, as well as the Board, fail in their stewardship of the club on behalf of its members, if they don't throw the spotlight on Sexton in the course of the review being conducted by Simon Lethlean. On any analysis, Sexton's lofty claims at the start of season 2015 and these not being achieved in 2018, should mean that his time is well and truly up. Twelve years is a bloody long time for a coach at any level at the one club to survive without success.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Agree Sanctorum. Would think after the annus horribilis we have had, someone out of Richardson, Kingsley or Sexton must be held accountable
Richo seems to be untouchable seeing Finnis and the board have nailed their colours to his ship. Kingsley seems genuinely sharp
Which leaves Sexton?....

I think Kingsley is too smart by half - word I have heard is that he over complicated things early in the season and it was only in the latter part that he backed off (player input?) Peta is contracted for next year - I believe she is now only with the womens side.
