We are beginning to look stupid
I don't care that the trade period hasn't commenced...... I'm doing the Chicken Little. The sky IS falling.
Martin, Kelly, Fyfe, Stringer, Devon Smith, Sloane, Lever, Watts, Rockliff, Charlie Cameron, Trengove, Motlop, Duncan, Hall.
All names who would improve our team on field. Every single one of them.
And yet we have almost certainly been left with our d*cks in our hands on all of them.
There'd want to be someone being held accountable at this footy club given the 2020 plan revolved around us trading out two top 10 picks this year to push for a 2020 flag.
I won't have it.

Whoa!
Ease up cowboy!
Out of your list I believe we have only seriously looked at:
Martin, Kelly, Fyfe, with Devon Smith and Sloane debatable.
We are only after a star nothing less.
We have traded really well the past few years and have gotten a handful of B grade players (nothing wrong with that) that can help move us forward.
This year it was all about convincing an absolute A Grader to come across. It was always going to be hard.
We clearly are happy to take the picks to the draft if we cannot and look to get a star there.
Don't be surprised if we do something to move up the order as well!

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
We're not beginning to look stupid. We do look stupid, given our stated strategy. The strategy of trading out pick ten has failed. We now look to the draft, tail between our legs to a certain extent. We are clearly not a destination club. Like the other challenger in the race to be the most irrelevant club in the competition, Norf. Notice how they couldn't attract anyone either?
"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
That's a problem in itself if you ask me. We wasted a hell of a lot of time on Martin and Kelly from what I can gather. To the detriment it seems of showing genuine interest in other players who would also improve the squad. That is negligent.IluvHarvey wrote:Whoa!

There isn't a single player on that list I pointed out that isn't;
a) gettable and
b) an improvement on our current players in each position.

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
Our plan to trade aggressively could have been a card we played closer to our chest I guess, but in chasing big names during the season it was hardly a surprise announcement. Well, if anything, it does flag the club's self belief that we should be a destination club, if only our last few months of footy had been playing the same tune.
I agree that taking 7 & 8 to the draft would be a publicity disaster for the club, but not a strategic one. Panic not.

Still plenty of water to pass under the bridge.
Ameet Bains and Trout should be waiting under that bridge like nasty trolls.

I am happy not to get Gaff if it takes 7 & 8 as it’s too high a price.saintsRrising wrote:Not according to Bains this morning.SMS wrote:Were getting gaff
Trying to get players who are contracted for next year or more is a thankless task as their club holds all the aces.
I am happy to take those picks to the draft and maybe get the next Sloane or Gaff.
One year will be our year

This. No sense bringing in B-Graders to replace ones we already have. Some of whom we've invested a lot in and some of whom still have vast improvement to come.IluvHarvey wrote:Whoa!

I'm more than happy if we go to the draft with picks 7 and 8. Build the list from the bottom up.

Bit early to panic surely?ss1986 wrote:How long do we need to wait?
It's dementing. This wasn't the plan the Pelican had. We're straying, and I don't like it.
Is there a reason the Pelican hasn't worked in footy since being moved on?

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
Well - he estimated top 4 by 2018.
Unless we pull a Richmond, who did it on the back of some good recruiting in Prestia and Caddy to top off their list, then we won't be within a bull's roar of 4th.
Of course things don't go exactly to plan - but his plan was solid if we broadly followed the blueprint. This will be a significant shift by going to the draft (read, lotto with our track record) rather than targeting some ready-made big fish.

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
None of the real stars in Fyfe,Kelly & Martin moved so all clubs must be stupid? A few B graders have signalled a move, most of which should not be a real priority for us. Lever would be nice, but we have Roberton, Gilbert & Carlisle as intercept marks. Devon Smith, perhaps, but crook knees and we have Billings, Gresh etc.
Motlop, Stringer, no thanks. You can't just go for any player, need to fill gaps.
Quite happy to have 7 & 8 and see what happens from next week.

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
It is a given that our recruiters are mediocre at best but their task is made more difficult by the fact that no half decent player wants to join us. As a destination club we are about as popular as Afghanstan is as a holiday resort

You can top up forever and stay mid table , so when we got to that stage we decided to offload bj and dal to bottom out and rebuild. We have rebuilt a mid table side- awesome

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
wouldnt we (by nature of our supposed war chest of cash n picks)
be driving UP the costs to other clubs ?
who knows what might fall out of the can't pay anymore tree
why is that not a legit tactic ?

Re: We are beginning to look stupid
Surely a trolling post. How can swapping pick 10 for 7 plus a 2nd rounder fail. Clearly lacking common sense if you can't see that.Drake Huggins wrote:We're not beginning to look stupid. One of the younger lists in the comp, and no one has left or stated they want to leave. Trade period has not even started!!! Go Saints!

Agreed. Plus a 3rd pick as well I think. Same poster raised "failure" of pick 10 previously, probably under a different nic. TrollThe Barometer wrote:Surely a trolling post.
