Zebs Board thinking about cutting ties to Saints...

Post: # 1687961Post WellardSaint »

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-07-25/z ... h-st-kilda

SANDRINGHAM'S board and leadership group members were deep in discussion on Tuesday night
about the possibility of ending the VFL club's eight-year alignment with St Kilda.

...
Zebras and Saints officials also met in the past month about their alignment,
which is a "rolling agreement" rather than a contract.
But typically each club would have to make a decision early in the previous season about continuing the union into the next year.

It's just discussions at the moment.
Norf in April announced it wants to launch its own distinct VFL team next year.

Zebs will go bust if they ditch us, but we can't afford our own VFL side either.

This is just another tactic by them to try and dictate to us how many Zebs players play each week.

Hopefully we will hold them to ransom and stand our ground.

Both will suffer from the VFL decision ( to go to AFL commission) to Not continue with Development league
What point for Aligned VFL teams to have playing listscless than 20
Don't blame them but neither Saints nor Sandy can afford it

Wonder what othe aligned clubs are doing - is it real that Box Hill are really Hawks

Could we just scrap the VFL alignment thingy then, and just play our reserve games as curtain raisers for AFL games? Could THAT work?

That is incorrect. It's all to do with the scrapping of the Development League

Had the Development League remained, the alignment would have continued until one or the other decided to go stand alone

The scrapping of the Development League has simply brought this process forward. Nothing whatsoever to do with how many Sandy players play seniors each week

If the Saints decided to follow Norf and field a Saints Reserves team in the VFL,
like someone said, costs a lot of money,
and a helluva lot of time.
You have to line up sponsors, convince them to pay money (and that's money that could have gone to Saints AFL team)

Current Zebs sponsors are in place, so Zebs look after their own $$$
It's a lot of damn work and mucking around
It's not like arranging an indoor cricket team for your workplace

Do the Saints approach another VFL team for alignment?
Frankston Dolphins is close by, but they are working hard on their own set ups and might not want any distractions.

so box Hill can't see a future without Hawthon - but where is identity and how do you onluy have a list of 10-15 players?

They don't really exist, they haven't got a licence yet,
but they want to get 1200 members and restart next year with Buckenara as CEO
http://frankstonfc.com.au/

And
http://frankstonfc.com.au/afl-vic-licence-submission/

The official date for our licence submission to AFL Vic has been set! Monday 24th July is the day we present our case to get our team back for 2018.

Our focus during July is on presenting a sound case and if successful we will see a fresh approach from the Dolphins with an emphasis on community involvement and a closer relationship with football club across the Peninsula.

Thanks to all our loyal supporters, old & new, we have reached an all time high of Club Members and are fast approaching the biggest membership in the VFL! What an amazing show of support that we hope continues for many years to come.

The outcome, and our fate, will be known by early August.

Increase the price of memberships by $12.50 to cover the Saints VFL team.

Good. It was great watching the Sandy telecast last week and watching them play on a real football ground rather than the Beach Rd postage stamp.

Ditch them and form our own VFL team playing at Moorabbin.

I dont believe too many members would begrudge the increase to have a stand alone VFL side.

that would be my thinking - the plans I have seen for the redevelopment dont really factor in crowds of any size

Must be frustrating for Zebs fans when we play Armo for a half and then insist he sits on the bench.

I'd be delighted to pay a levy if it meant seeing a saints side, any side, in our colours playing out of Moorabbin. This is where the securing of an AFLW licence for the club becomes even more important. There is a cost with starting any new side, but it also creates new revenue streams. Imagine the first VFL game at Moorabbin, with a genuine saints team in our traditional strip. It would be a lockout! Do it, Saints!

It's a shame they haven't really allowed for spectators in the new Moorabbin designs. A new grandstand on one of the wings would have been great. I quite like the one at Frankston Park.

it's a bit of a long boring read but the important last paragraph is:
AFL Victoria will reveal on August 7 whether Frankston was successful in its bid to return after a season out of the VFL,
but no other licenses will be considered for 2018
.

So if the Zebs cut ties with our club, where do these guys play?
Freeman, Battle, DMack, Wright, Goddard and all the rest?
Is this just a change on paper, do they keep playing as Zebs and if they have good form,
the Saints ask the Zebs to release them to play AFL?
- how about if the Zebs get into the finals and say "no you can't have them, we need them"

If the Dolphins get up, do the Saints go begging to them so our players can play there?
Maybe the Dolphins' application had something to do with Zebs wanting freedom?
Zebs maybe thought "we need to develop a winning culture, and having these Sainters here is not good for cohesion,
the AFL-listed players are not here for "Zebs" but only here to get into Saints"
So Saints can get into bed with Frankston.
