Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
1. Buddy at Sydney = 0 flags
2. PDF at Geelong = 0 Flags
3. Ablett at GC = 0 Flags
4. Judd at Carlton = 0 Flags
5. Getting Fyfe will not weaken our main rival in coming years - GWS.

Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
No to Fyfe. We've got potential Fyfes on the list. This year will reveal Acres and Gresham as elite. Dunstan too. Stick with our own. As for giving him the captaincy, that would be a disaster. We've got our own. Offer the bont a million. Now you're talking.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Excellent player but he was never a high profile/high paid messiah or 'star' of the comp. The four players I mentioned are or have been at one stage the highest paid player in the entire comp.shmic_s wrote:One reason:

Burgoyne wouldnt ever have been top 40 paid in the AFL. Not really a great equivalence imo. If we got Fyfe he would be the highest paid player at the club by a country mile.
No way was Burgoyne ever the highest paid at the Hawks. Probably not even top 3.

Can I add in 6?
6. Injury.
If you throw a large chunk of your SC at one single player and that players gets injured - it is a disaster.

It's an interesting conundrum. For me , much depends on where our 2 first round picks are next year (because that's what we are going to have to sacrifice as well as the cash). Could we swap our 2 first round picks for maybe a top 3 pick instead ? I just can't see us landing a Fyfe with just 1 first round pick and a second or third round pick.

True. Lets say we end up with picks 10 and 11. That probably gets it done as far as a trade goes. But wont he be a RFA? For me the big issue is that he will want almost double the $ of our 2nd highest paid player in Jack Steven. This will create a very uneven SC situation and leaves us vulnerable imo. Every time a club gets a messiah on twice as much $ as everyone else it doesnt work out for them.Zed wrote:It's an interesting conundrum. If we go for Kelly or Shiel - they would only be on the same coin as Jack Steven you would reckon. It also weakens GWS a little.

Agree with your points. Not saying I'd necessarily want us to chase Fyfe.Con Gorozidis wrote:Can I add in 6?

I have faith in Ameet's work that he wouldn't throw a large chunk of money at one player. Holding on to our own talent is more important and better use of the SC.
But if any player is going to help us improve and wants to come, we would have to have a look.
My point was you can use examples to make it look like a great or terrible idea.

mope won't cost any draft picks, would be a free agentZed wrote:2 first round picks are next year (because that's what we are going to have to sacrifice as well as the cash)..
Also those clubs lost a bit to get those players
1. Buddy at Sydney = 0 flags has cost the swans Mitchel and Mumford
2. PDF at Geelong = 0 Flags cost them draft picks
3. Ablett at GC = 0 Flags hasn't really cost them anything apart from cash
4. Judd at Carlton = 0 Flags lost big in kennedy and a very low pick

Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
True. But still not sure he is anything like Fyfe who is a 'star' of the comp.kosifantutti wrote:Tom Boyd, 1 flag.
Boyd coudnt get a kick when they recruited him and everyone was bagging him and them mercilessly in his first year.
He is probably the highest paid dog though. Did it work? Yes.
Remember though that the previous highest paid Dog was Griffen - who left. So in a way Boyd didnt totally upset the pay order.
Number 1 was replaced by Number 1. So relatively everyone stayed the same. It didnt upset the apple cart so much.
If we get Fyfe then then everyone else goes down a rung.

It's a very results based hypothesis though isn't it.Con Gorozidis wrote:True. But still not sure he is anything like Fyfe who is a 'star' of the comp.kosifantutti wrote:Tom Boyd, 1 flag.

Boyd was recruited for top $$$ and played an important part in their premiership... I don't know that I would say that was the move that got them there though

Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
I echo the sentiments of Con Goro. I would rather us get Josh Kelly or Dylan Shiel/ Cost less and hurts GWS. If we gave them a player and a first round pick, and insist we get 2nd round pick back, I would be happy.

Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
I agree with Con - We don't want to be spending too much moolah on only one player. Anything can happen to him and it has already happened twice in the last 2 years.
We have done this in the past with a few star players taking up too much of the salary cap and then needing to get in the dregs to make up the numbers. Lets go for that even champion team status for once.
No to fyffe! Yes to team!

Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
On second thoughts Buckley wasn't a superstar at Brisbane, so he probably doesn't count. The others though were all superstars at their respective clubs before transferring for big money. Interesting discussion point.
Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
Bit harsh dangerfield, dragged an average list to the equal best record of the season and polled the most brownlow votes in history. Ditto franklin, and won a Coleman there and was 1 goal off doing it again.
question isn't did they win but would they have been as good. Anything can happen in finals, we know that well enough.

Some good arguments on both sides.Griggsy wrote:Bit harsh dangerfield, dragged an average list to the equal best record of the season and polled the most brownlow votes in history. Ditto franklin, and won a Coleman there and was 1 goal off doing it again.

Of course PDF and Buddy make their sides better but there is a cost as well. The Cats had to sacrifice Stevie J and arguably Caddy. The Swans Mummy and probably Tom Mitchell. That is how the salary Cap system ought to work anyway.

Re: Five reasons not to go for Fyfe next year
If he tears the 2017 season to shreds then maybe... but I doubt that's going to happen... his body is already pretty banged up for a 27 year old.
Sheil or Heeney perhaps. Who else is out of contract or a free agent at the end of next season?
