Saints in LGBTQI game
"The St Kilda Football Club has today launched the AFL's historic, first-ever Pride Game, which is set to celebrate and recognise Australian football's LGBTQI fans, players, staff, and associates.
The Saints will dedicate their Round 21 clash against the Sydney Swans to the LGBTQI community, and hope to use the game as a platform to foster and develop improved pathways for LGBTQI people to both participate in, and work in the sport, with a view to eradicating homophobic behaviour completely from the game.
The Saints revealed they will be wearing jerseys with rainbow numbers on them in celebration of the occasion."

Our jumpers
I kinda like them - pretty funky on the numbers. Will make them a bit harder to read but as a one-off thats ok.

Re: Saints in LGBTQI game
This is a nice initiative, however there is an irony to all this.
Whilst we're launching such an event, still out of about 700 or 800 current AFL players and thousands of former AFL players, not one has come out as gay that I know of.

Re: Saints in LGBTQI game
I think that's the point, LL!! Common sense tells you that out of 700 or 800 people, 20 or 30 of them are likely to be gay. The fact that none of them has come out suggests they didn't feel safe to or feel they won't be accepted if they do. An initiative like this is hopefully going to make it easier for them to be themselves, not have to conceal such an important aspect of themselves in their working day-to-day.

Re: Saints in LGBTQI game
It is a paradoxical situation. There's never been an "easier" or more tolerant society in which to come out, yet no AFL player ever has. A bit like Hollywood. Tolerant of gays and supportive in the media, but relatively few actors have actually "come out". Maybe we're not all as tolerant as we pretend to be. Events like this are vital in pushing issues. It takes someone to take action. I think the message would be far more powerful if a player actually came out before the game. Now that would be making a courageous statement.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

I'm all for it - I think it's a great initiative.
I just wish they'd show a little humour and have the goal umps wear feather boa's, the field umps in sequins and maybe the centre circle as a brown star - why not have a bit of fun with it all?
Missed opportunity if you ask me!

Re: Saints in LGBTQI game
Great initiative! With the club being through some pretty disappointing off field incidents in years gone by it's great that we finally attached ourselves to something I can happily say I am proud to be a fan of the club because of it.
A lot of people are cynically saying "St Kilda are only doing this because it's a good corporate PR move to attract sponsors to be on top of social issues in 2016." Maybe that's true, it probably is, but you know what, if capitalism and sport can intersect to provide a positive outcome for change and awareness for an important issue I am more than happy for us to take advantage of it.

I wonder why the continual adding-
"Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning and Intersex"
and it seems they are adding a new one in some regions of the world
what Does LGBTQIA mean?
Lesbian – A female- identified person who is attracted romantically, physically, or emotionally to another female-identified person.
Gay – A person, mainly a male-identified person, who is attracted romantically, physically, or emotionally to another a person of the same sex.
Bisexual – A person who is attracted romantically, physically, or emotionally to both men and women.
Transgender – A person who is a member of a gender other than that expected based on anatomical sex.
Queer – An umbrella term which embraces a variety of sexual preferences, orientations, and habits of those who do not adhere to the heterosexual and cisgender majority. The term queer includes, but is not exclusive to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transpeople, and intersex persons, traditionally, this term is derogatory and hurtful, however, many people who do not adhere to sexual and/or gender norms use it to self-identify in a positive way.
Intersex – Someone who’s physical sex characteristics are not categorized as exclusively male or exclusively female.
Asexual – A person who does not have a sexual orientation. A person that does not experience a sexual attraction but can experience a romantic, emotional, or aesthetic attraction to another person.
Ally – A person who does not identify as LGBTQIA, but supports the rights and safety of those who do
