Can Trent McKenzie play midfield? What's happened to him? Is he injured or in the NEAFL? What does Mav think of him?

Re: What do we really need player-wise?????
I was sure an elite Mid that can do it all was number 1 priority but Im not as sure now.
Another tall defender is required at some stage even with Carlisle coming in and probably another elite mid although Freeman would fill a major hole if he comes good.

197cm+ key defender

Re: What do we really need player-wise?????
We need a third tall defender, a player like Caleb Marchbank should be on our radar.
We need another inside out beast with speed and goalkicking abilities, a player like a fit JOM, Shiel, D Martin or Steele
An outside runner who doesn't stop running and impacts on the scoreboard like Gaff, Kelly, Or Weller.
Those 3 'types' would be what we should be after.

BACKLINE
We have pretty good depth in all positions except the backline. But the backline is one of those things you can patch together with some smart trades or lower draft picks even so I'm not too stressed by that. We have some good young talent coming through. Goddard and Carlisle look good tall backs. Roberton/Coughland/Lee/Delaney are all outside chances/backup worth pursuing. But a draft pick or trade with a lower pick for another tall might be in order. White, Rice and Mckenzie are all really promising candidates to give us the good kicking and run from the back we really need to support Joey, Savage and Webster.
FORWARD LINE
Think we are pretty well stocked here. High quality with McCartin and Billings. Bruce and Membrey looking solid. Some good small options with Sinclair, Lonie, NOK, Gresham, Weller etc. I thought for a while we might look at using a high pick for another power forward but if Pierce can come on he could be that fwd/ruck we might need.
MIDFIELD
Here lies the rub. I have genuine concern now at this stage in our rebuild that we haven't got the quality in the engine room that we will need to compete at the highest level. Look at GWS and Melbournes midfield - they are chock full of high draft picks. If you can't get your engine room going, everything falls over. There is just so much unknown with the likes of Ross, Acres, Dunstan, Gresham, Freeman, Newnes whether they can become genuine A-grade mids - and we need several of them to do that. I still don't see Billings being a genuine midfielder - more a half forward who will go through there a bit and will bring in a bit of magic. Steven is our best and his lack of great kicking is a worry. Our top pick this year has to go either on the best mid in the draft or we take a stab at JOM negotiating a big trade discount due to his risk. With Freemanstein still laying on the slab waiting for lightening to strike, it would be a huge gamble. But maybe its the gamble that takes us to a flag.

Re: What do we really need player-wise?????
Just go through our 22 from Saturday, and decide if each player will be a premiership player in the GWS-dominated era we're about to step into.
Joey and Roo need replacing. Same with Fisher and Dempster.
3 of those guys come from the same part of the ground. That's a massive hole back there. Carlisle fills one of them, so we need more attention to filling the other spots.
Bruce is struggling under the expectation and added attention from defenders that 2016 has brought. Membury's year has been beyond what most of us could have imagined, and the mosquito fleet is positive if not consistent. McCartin is a huge question mark right now.
We have Steven in the middle, and Ross, and then huge limitations beyond that. Too many maybes in the middle of the ground.
In fact, too many maybes in the whole list. Maybe Paddy becomes Plugger MK2, or maybe his soft head causes him to pull the pin at 22. Maybe Hugh comes back as Harry Taylor, or maybe he goes from semi-trailer agility to Titanic agility post-achilles. Maybe Acres becomes Nat Fyfe, maybe he comes Raph Clarke?? Maybe Dunstan lives up to the number 7 on his back, maybe he has second year blues for a decade?? Maybe Billings becomes the star we see glimpses of, or maybe he makes a career out of glipses and ultimately never fulfils the potential. Maybe Minch/Lonie/Sinclair/Templeton/Murdoch etc have successful AFL careers, or maybe they have successful VFL careers.
We need a few more certainties. GWS has a seemingly endless list of certainties - Cameron, Shiel, Kelly, Cognilio, Ward, Kennedy, Greene etc.
And then we need some luck....

Three players who have been on the GWS list for two years and are yet to get a game, Pickett, Paul Ahern, Jeremy Finlayson. All would improve our list. WE should pursue them,

Re: What do we really need player-wise?????
I would have thought key back was ok
You never list manage for a 12 month period... And 2018-20 is what we are looking at
I would have hoped Goddard 196, Carlisle 198 were the future key backs... You do not want another that big in your d50 or you become slow on the exit. A couple of back ups are obviously needed though, especially now Hugh will be likely to miss 2017.

Re: What do we really need player-wise?????
I would start from the other perspective, being the players on our List who are required.
And then see where the gaps are.
So Hickey, Carlisle, Steven, Ross, Dunstan, Acres, Freeman, Montagna, Riewoldt, Billings, Newnes, Roberton, Longer, Gilbert, Armitage, Gresham, Goddard, Dempster, Fisher, Bruce, Membrey (now) and McCartin.
So, that is 22!!!!
Mind you, there are some veterans on that list so we need to have replacements in prospect.
Those not named are in the position of showing each week that they do have a future in an AFL Premiership side (and that description of "Premiership side" is deliberate).
Membrey is one who has jumped the fence on consistent performance this season.
So support for Steven, Freeman and Billings as "outside" midfielders would appear the most obvious from who we currently have.
Support for Fisher, Carlisle and Goddard able to match up on size forwards would appear the other area.
Support for Gresham as a small forward is another area.
And the only small/mid-sized flank defender is Newnes, so that is another area.
And then see where the gaps are.

Lonie, Sinclair, Billings, Templeton, Minchington, NickO....

I'm pretty sure we are ok with small fwd/mids

Re: What do we really need player-wise?????
I have not seen any break out games from Lonie, Sinclair, Templeton, Minchington or O'Kearney as yet - performances which put them above bits and pieces players who might occasionally jag a goal.
And to support that, they all played at Sandringham last week except for Lonie who has got another chance because of injury and has not cemented that chance and Minchington who struggles to have a consistent impact.
None of them has yet shown that they can impose themselves on a game and influence a result.
So the jury is well and truly out on each - noting also that, apart from the Rookie Listed O'Kearney, all are at least now into their second seasons.

Minchington has been in the seniors also.... for atleast 2-4 weeks now....
He's a lock, good player is Meatball & Eli is good and should get a gig.
Like the look of young O'Kearney to, should promote him this week.

Josh Kelly and Steven May in 2018 and Jack Steele and Caleb Marchbank next year.
I would also love our recruiters to find us a bargain pick like a Marcus Adams or Sam Collins!!!
