200 Marks to go to #1 for Roo

With another 11 marks today Roo takes his career tally past 2,700
He now has 2,706 marks in 308 games which ranks him #2 on the all-time marks list.

This puts him exactly 200 marks behind Gary Dempsey with 2,906 marks in 328 games.

(Buckets is in third spot with 2,503 from 321 games).

Roo is averaging almost 11 marks a game this year with the greater freedom of playing midfield.
At that rate another 19 games should see him break the record.
If he plays on in 2017 the record will be his, plus he will be the first to break the 3,000 barrier.

(Note such stats were not kept before the 1970's but it is unlikely anyone pre-1970 would even be close).

surprisingly Joey is 5th on the list for this year..

3 of the top 5 including Joey play across the backline. Their high marking numbers explained by the way the ball is chipped around there as well as being in good form. Being good distributors their team mates are probably instructed to get the ball to them.

Plugger got his marks the hard way. Dempsey used to stand in the back pocket and the full back would kick it to him aldosterone every kick out... Stats lie... Roo by miles

Dempsey was an amazingtap ruckman and contested mark in an era when they used to kick to contests all the time. Would never downgrade his achievements. One of the best ruckman ever. Polly Farmer better around the ground. Dean Cox took that to another level. Graeme Moss had more class but Dempsey just did his job perfectly week in and week out. And he kept clunking contested marks.

What a remarkable statistic. I didn't realise Dempsey was the all time career marks record holder. After watching the big buckets of Stewie Loewe, I would have never have dreamed of another St.Kilda champion who would pull in more grabs of the football. What an undisputed maestro of the game Rooey is. So why did Collingwood supporters have so much hate and display so much contempt for him in 2010? They must have been jealous of his outstanding skills.

We celebrated Nicks 200th game as captain in round 1, so he is on 209 now.

Dempsey was a fantastic mark.
One of his trademarks, in fact he made it his position, was to play one kick behind the play in the centre corridor.
Time and time again he would mark a kick forward by the opposition.
He was fairly mobile, very tall, and had long arms.
So it was almost impossible for anyone other than a ruckman to out mark him.

Maybe the rule needs to change that if you kick it backwards then it doesn't count as a mark for your team mate but just play on.
