St Kilda is extremely proud to have lodged it’s submission for a National Women’s League (NWL) team license today.
CEO Matt Finnis said the Saints were driven by the belief that women can do anything and deserve this opportunity in football.
http://www.saints.com.au/video/2016-04- ... t-imagined video
"I am confident that we have a very compelling case to win one of the inaugural licences – our submission is driven by a genuine belief in the power of what this competition can achieve and the important message it sends,” he said.

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
Absolutely awesome news.
Let's get on the front foot and create a powerhouse team.
Seeing the success of the W-League has proven there's such viability in women's sport and I'm thrilled our club is progressive enough to be at the vanguard.

We probably have the best credentialed ladies coach in Pieta Searle. Pretty sure she coached her them to consecutive premerships before getting a role with St Kilda as the first ever female on a seniour coaching panel.

This is all good & well, but how are our plans for a standalone VFL team going? Getting that up and running asap should be our priority.

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
I don't understand the womens league. Can someone explain the benefits of it. Does it mean if they're good enough that they can play with the men?
Or do we have a chance for an alternative St.Kilda premiership?

VICTORIAN BIDS IN A NUTSHELL
CARLTON
Integrated program with football manager Andrew McKay to oversee both men’s and women’s football. Elite facilities ready to go. Development work with female players in the northern corridor.
COLLINGWOOD
Major selling points are an MCG-sized ground situated in the heart of the Olympic Park, a recently opened $25 million facility as well as significant corporate backing. And the Collingwood Army.
ESSENDON
Not bidding
GEELONG
Geography — a base for the competition in Victoria’s second city — is a major factor. History of success both on the field and in delivering major projects — such as redeveloped Kardinia Park. Financially capable.
HAWTHORN
Not bidding
MELBOURNE
Current and recent past investment into women’s football has helped the game get to where it is now. Will embed the women’s side into their club.
NORTH MELBOURNE
Bid focuses on model based heavily on existing links to the Melbourne Uni women’s team which has produced top level players. The Roos’ growing presence in Tasmania is also a factor.
RICHMOND
The Tigers see Punt Rd as an eventual home to the new league, right in the shadows of the MCG. Richmond — the only club to have a female president, Peggy O’Neal — also points to a track record of championing gender equity.
ST KILDA
The Saints point to high participation numbers in bayside Melbourne, who chief executive Matt Finnis said this week are “showing in numbers, through their passion, through their talent, that they need a team to represent them”.
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Three teams, one club model. Long history in women’s football and four years’ experience with current team. Focus beyond existence of new comp to creating elite performance. Campus hub based around Whitten Oval and Victoria University. Pathways for players into coaching and administration.

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
Done.
I think this is a great initiative by the club.
Will help promote the game across bayside to boys and girls.
I'm a traditionalist and would love to see our seconds play a curtain raiser before each game but I guess those days are not going to come back.
Would be good to see our girls playing in a curtain raiser before the main game.
(And so so soooo much better than the current so called pre match "entertainment").

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
Part of the bid was the "one club - 3 elite teams" mantra, the Senior team, the VFL team, and the Womens team all being linked. So definitely still on the agenda.Linton Lodger wrote:This is all good & well, but how are our plans for a standalone VFL team going? Getting that up and running asap should be our priority.
The redevelopment of Moorabbin may push it back by a year though, as mentioned in the media last week....

Can't understand why we didn't link our bid to the St Kilda Sharks - probably the best established highest profile women's team there is.

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
I love footy, but I'll NEVER support a women's team. Simply on the principal that they don't deserve to be paid. The best female athletes should get the cash, not females who play football because generally they have never been good enough to play or compete in top female sports. It's a slap in the face to real female athletes who have been fighting so hard to be recognised and get appropriate financial remuneration. Let's face it, who really cares about some women's football league? Honestly. They are riding on the coat tails of the AFL and it annoys the hell out of me. Good luck to them I guess. I'm all for anyone playing sports but women playing footy should be amateur only. It's almost patronising to pretend we really care about it

Pretty strange to be claiming its patronising to "pretend" to care, while claiming that all female footballers aren't real athletes.
Also you wont support a team because they shouldn't get paid over other females, so you would support them if the athletes you deemed worthy of payment started to earn a living through their sport?

I'd be far more supportive of it. However in my view the whole concept is a novelty thing. Ppl will watch initially but eventually get bored. How many can actually lay claim to watching a game of women's football? I've umpired several games of it.amusingname wrote:Moods wrote:I love footy, but I'll NEVER support a women's team. Are women going to be forced to play traditionally men's sports to get any publicity in Australia?

Is this a serious post? Interesting you use the word patronising when describing those that may have an interest in it.
I don't think your post could be more patronising to those female athletes that play football and train much harder than blokes who get $1000 a match to play local/country leagues and get pissed afterwards with their mates. Now that's amateur.
How do you suggest 'the best female athletes' become the best female athletes if they are not exposed to an organised, supported competition? It all starts somewhere.
Personally, I think it's a fantastic initiative, and I hope we get a team and I will purchase a membership and take a great interest in their games.

I have watched a few games, having met a few of the St Kilda Sharks players over the years. I don't think the players are seeing it as a novelty thing and I don't see how they are being forced to play the game to get publicity, they have played for years for nothing and would be looking forward to the chance to play in a more elite league than what exists now.
What sports aren't traditionally men's sports? Netball? Softball I guess? anything else? Hockey, Soccer, basketball all began as male sports.

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
If the women's is a commercially viable model then of course they should be paid from the proceeds.
This grows our St Kilda family. We're not just an elite squad of senior men's players.
- We'll have a VFL team for the second tier and development of young players
- A fully-fledged female team to represent desire of women to get involved
And I'd love to see us go one step further in the future by getting our tentacles deep into the community.
There's huge opportunities in the community space that are being totally missed by AFL clubs.

I don't care that women want to play football but who would pay to watch it? Surely just their families and that's about it.
Would be like paying to watch Auskick.

Re: St Kilda applies for a Womens Football team
I guess initially they'll be curtain-raisers - but there'll be plenty of women who'll join the clubs that field women's teams because of the woman's team and plenty of advertisers that jump on board too. That's where the revenue will come from.
