What Happened to the Dot in "St.Kilda"?

The proper spelling is "ST.KILDA", but everyone these days seems to insist that it's spelt "St Kilda" (or worse still, "Saint Kilda").

"St." is the correct abbreviation for Saint before the name which follows, e.g. St.John, St.Paul, St.James etc.

Has anyone else noticed this error in spelling that has somehow crept in unnoticed by the general public? Is is yet another symptom from the decline of our language in the digital age? I realise a number of people may find it trivial, but I think it's a big deal when something as important as spelling goes astray.

For goodness sake, the least we can do is spell the name of our beloved club correctly. Bring back the dot!

i think you may find that the . is actually incorrect as st kilda is not short for saint kilda. so we used to get it wrong, and now we don't.

There's actually a very cool history behind that name.

It was named after a boat called "Lady of St Kilda", which was named in honor of Lady Grange, who was imprisoned on the island of Hirta, the largest island in the St Kilda archipelago in Scotland. And the origin of the name of that place is pretty much a mystery, and possibly even a Dutch cartographical error.

Yeah it seems odd not to have the dot. I'm going to continue using it. After all, the club's nickname is the Saints.

And which ground was that scoreboard at? One umpire and the race results. Is it the Junction scoreboard?

Thanks Sainternist for the lovely photo of the then brand new scoreboard at Moorabbin. Round one, 1965, about 10 minutes into the last quarter.

Scores were level in time on, Saints 7.12 to Coll'wood 8.6. Alan Morrow kicked the final goal and the Saints were away at there brand-new ground.

Nothe the absense of the time clock on the scoreboard, that came later. Just like the urinals in one of the toilet blocks, just queue up and pee on the crushed blue metal insde the new cream brick toilet block! Cant imagine that happening anywhere today especially with 51,000 in attendance.

Just like the ground the Saints were pretty goo but not quite ready in 1965. Shades of now except we are even further away!

Looks like Round 1 1965 was played over Easter as only 3 games were played on the Saturday and other 3 were played on Monday

Looking at the other scores in that pic

A & B were Fitzroy and Essendon - game played at Brunswick Oval - 3 quarter time scores
G & H were Hawthorn and Carlton - game being played at Glenferrie Oval - 3 quarter time scores

Thinking back in the 80s that those scoreboard letters were usually linked to certain grounds

A & B was usually games being played at VFL Park
C & D was Princes Park (Hawthorn or Carlton)
E & F was Victoria Park & Moorabbin (Collingwood & St Kilda)
G & H was MCG (Richmond or Melbourne)
K & N was Arden Street & Windy Hill (North Melbourne & Essendon)
R & S was Kardinia Park & Western Oval (Geelong & Footscray)

Lake Oval (South Melbourne) ??

There actually should be no dot as St is not an abbreviation of Saint.

The . just keeps getting put in because many over time have wrongly understood our name and assume it is Saint Kilda which is not.

Well there are rigid rules on how "english" words are pronounced.

ie Four is not said like hour or flour.

There are many worlds in "English" that owe their pronunciation to their history and not to how they would be "anglicised".

So where does the Saints come from, something we imagined might fit in?

I'm pretty sure that the pronunciation of Melbourne is different to the way Lord Melbourne's name was pronounced.
