Free Agents in 2016

Post: # 1597204Post footynut »

THere doesn't seem to be a lot of quality free agents in 2016. However Steele sidebottom will be one of them. He's a quality player and would be awesome in our midfield. Should we throw the farm at him or focus on the draft for another year?

Worth chasing. Even if we just drive up the cost to another club.

Free agents ain't free (well except maybe for Free-man). You pay through the nose for them. You can never say never and we will obviously be watching the market and putting out some feelers but unless they were a bargain I would be hitting the draft with all our picks next year - we've already traded our second rounder for Freeman.

Carlisle and Freeman were calculated risks and yes the draft is a bit of a lotto but one you can win huge in if you get it right. These FA come in on big money which must rub others players the wrong way. Freeman hasn't completed an AFL game and is on huge cash. How does that sit with Billings and Dunstan who have bleed for the cause against men on minimum salary? So its swings and roundabouts with these FA's. They may have front loaded contracts but we won't know until they renegotiate their contracts. Players tend not to want to drop in salary. We have to watch our salary cap carefully as we may have superstars in McCartin, Billings, ACres, Dunstan, Gresham and future picks and will have to pay them accordingly.

Plus we want to keep that even spread of talent across each year and we've already lost our 2nd round pick next draft so when we go up we will have sustained success, maximising our chance at multiple flags.

Free agents don't cost you a draft pick.

You're talking unrestricted free agents who are usually outside their prime and almost certainly wouldn't fit our list build. With restricted FA, assuming the club matches their salary, you have to do a trade for them as they almost never go through the Preseason draft as its too risky to get to where they want to go. There is an understanding that clubs have to be compensated for losing a good player they have invested a lot of money, time and resources developing.

Cull 12 of our list.
Get
Nathan van Berlo
Scott Pendlebury
Steele Sidebottom
Dane Swan
Luke Hodge
Sam Mitchell
Todd Goldstein
Jack Ziebell
Jack Riewoldt
Dan Hannebery
Chris Masten
Matt Priddis

Pay em off via ridiculous four year contracts with three players each year awarded the bulk of it for that year.
BAM! Premiers 2017&18! Who cares about the fallout after that!

Ever heard of the salary cap?

Steele Sidebottom
Cale Hooker
David Myers
Jack Ziebell
Hamish Hartlett
Dan Hannebery

I think these are the only guys throwing the farm at, who are actually (possibly) gettable. Even these guys are a stretch - I can’t see Hannebery leaving to a non-contender; I can’t see Hartlett leaving SA.

Lot of the players on that list have signed contracts.... for example Hamish Hartlett signed like a 6 year deal late 2015! Jarrad Redden just joined West Coast so he wont be a free agent in 2016... plenty more...

Twelve years then! one million for two of them each year. Bugger all for the rest of it. It'd stuff us up for years - who'd care!? :D

Dan Hannebery would be a great pick up, the guy is a warrior.

What about the banned 12 from Essendon. Surely some of them will want out straight away.
Cale Hooker would be nice :D :D :D

We could offer Watts $5,000 a year so the Dees would have to pay him more than he's worth to keep him.

Yes. But 17 clubs will be thinking the same thing.

That list doesnt seem right. Many of those blokes have signed contracts.
My feeling is we hit the draft. We will 100% get a top 10 pick. Lets just focus all our resources on getting our first two round picks right. Lets say pick 5 + 23. Get them RIGHT.
Dont get sucked into the bs trade game. Draft em young. Draft em good.

We get 5 + 23 right - we are a real chance of top 4.

Trading is fine if they have 10 years footy left. To say just use the draft means you could miss out on a star who wants to leave a club.

Ziebell could be a good get. Don't know how faithful he is to the Kangaroos, if there is such a thing anymore. He's 24 and a good player, I don't think the Kangaroos have done enough to cover their aging stars so if ziebell wants a crack at a premiership once he hits his prime years at 27-29 then we would be a good choice.

EDIT
Don't know why Ziebell is on that list, he signed on a huge 5 year deal back in October, he's there till 2021

We played the futures market to get Mr DodgyHamstrings so we lost our second rounder in the next draft. So that further indicates we should use what we've got with the draft as we want a strong class of 2016 representing. I want to see us keep pumping in these kids like a conveyor belt each year. These young kids bond really well together in the strong development enviroment we are pumping resources into - you can see and hear it McCartin, Billings, Dunstan, Lonie etc all talking about being on a mission. You only want a few of those big trades when you are building the core of your list as they can rock the boat. I don't want us to go into top up mode too early like last time.

Is Sidebottom contracted or not? Free agent or restricted free agent?

If a free agent - won't cost a draft pick. A mid that kicks goals when playing mid and super dangerous resting forward.

We have the salary cap room.

We still have to screw the Pies back for Ball and questionable supplements in 2010.

Drive up his price or snare him.

Either way a WIN over that scum team.

I would consider all of them, except Hocking, Hooker and Myers, because we all know that drafting and Essendon doesn't mix!
