Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
When we gave Jamie Cripps the flick I thought WC were insane taking him. I thought the little mummies boy was going to barely get a game and just play in the twos till he was delisted.
To his credit not only has he turned things around and become part of their main list, he may also achieve what most of our long serving legends of the club all strived for (and some for many years over their highly decorated careers) but failed.
So then it got me thinking how many rejects over the past that have been given the boot by our club had the last laugh and gone all the way to winning the Holy Grail with another club.
I will start the ball rolling with one I can think of (which we should never have let go) in Dean Rice at Carlton.

We didn't give Cripps the boot he asked to be traded back to WA. There's a difference between him and Rice
Re: Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
Crippa wanted to return home. He had a longish term girlfriend that he missed as well as the family. We had no hope of keeing him. Just about the same way we got Hickey except he came here just for his girlfriend. Good on Cripps. He has done very well.
Re: Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
Done very well for a bloke with no draft photo.
On a serious note, Cripps was always going to make it. A very dangerous player from day one. Big loss for us.

And everyone seems to forget that he is as insulin dependant as McCartin. Doesn't seem to be affecting his football.ripplug66 wrote:Crippa wanted to return home. Val Perovic and Russell Greene come to mind.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Jamie requested a return to WA due to ongoing
health reasons. Club agreed as at that time Jamie
wanted family support. Our club put Jamies wellbeing first.

Lappin to the Blues, McEvoy to the Hawks and Ball to the Pies. I think all 3 went on to win flags.

Good luck to Jamie, Mark and Ben, hope they all have a great game!
My theory on former players is this, all have reasons for being somewhere else, remember the player they were for the saints and not what they are now.
All the best boys! Cause StoneCold said so!

Re: Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
As others have said we never 'gave him the flick'. He was developing nicely for a young kid. The only person on the planet who didn't think he was coming along well was BigMart. Took a few years to get his body up to AFL standard which is completely normal. Thats why its crazy to make big calls on anyone under 21. BigMart truly made an ass of himself on Cripps. He is approaching 100 AFL career goals already. Not fricking bad. Nat bad at all. Best footy in front of him as well.

Lappin didn't. Played in another losing GF in 99.Sainterman wrote:Lappin to the Blues, McEvoy to the Hawks and Ball to the Pies. I think all 3 went on to win flags.

He goes missing in large chunks of the game.

Re: Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
I always rated Jamie Cripps, he went home because he had a girl friend from Perth was what I heard. Big Mart lead a hysterical anti Cripps campaign on here and it was more than a little bizarre IMO. He was a high scoring quick player and showed heaps. Mart was obsessed with him being a front runner and soft after one duck when someone came at him from behind.

Daryl Wakelin. Surely there must be plenty more.
It seems more may have done it as rejects that got lucky other than higher performing players that were able to control and choose having more opportunity.

Dean Rice
Luke Ball
These are just players who left and then won a flag shortly after. I wouldn't call any of them 'rejects'.
Re: Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
Cripps shows tiny little glimpses of Rob Harvey - mostly just in the way he hits up targets on the lead - very Harvey-like. But he walked out on us, it was never our choice to keep him or not.
Note I'm not saying he is anywhere near Banger in any way, just here and there you see a little something - probably what got him our coveted 35 jumper.

It's easier to focus on those who left us and didn't win a flag.
These include:
Plugger
Craig O'Brien
Gilbert McAdam
Joel Smith
Peter Everitt
Shane Wakelin
David Sierakowski
Steven Sziller
Matthew Carr
Matt Maguire
Zac Dawson
Joe McLaren
Cain Ackland
Brendon Goddard

Re: Cripps & our rejects who had the last laugh
I remember during last years GF call Bruce saying that with McEvoy getting a flag there were now more ex-st Kilda players with a premiership than st Kilda players . So that makes it what 20 ex- saints who went on to win a flag ?

I remember hearing that as well but what does it mean? How does it compare to other clubs etc?Zed wrote:I remember during last years GF call Bruce saying that with McEvoy getting a flag there were now more ex-st Kilda players with a premiership than st Kilda players .
