Holmes would become the first US-born player to reach the top level of AFL, following the footsteps of Canadian Mike Pyke at Sydney.
“He’s very close. He’s right in the mix,” Richardson said.
“ (Tom) Hickey came back in and was pretty positive for us. Billy (Longer) has been good for us all year but looked like he’s tiring a bit so we’ve got a decision to make.”

Re: Holmes to debut?
The Geelong game is winnable.
We should field our best team.
We should be looking at including Membrey first - 9 goals in the last two weeks means he is on fire at Sandy.
I suspect the Holmes debut is more about symbolism.
He is a very capable tap ruckman but is not yet AFL standard in any other areas, but he continues to improve and tries really hard.
Let's save his debut for a game we can't win like R23 against West Coast. Play him then. Give him a taste, give him encouragement, give him reward, and make a statement.

What about cheap Hot Dogs if he plays to celebrate?
Etihad did cheaper food to celebrate Carlton's debacle against the Hawks a few weeks ago there.

Dont agree that it will be symbolism. Geelongs rucks are weak at present Holmes should be able to dominate this.Enrico_Misso wrote:The Geelong game is winnable.

Re: Holmes to debut?
It would be symbolism if we played Don Lane.
However this guy has been in the system for 2 years and is already playing the game to a very good standard.
Uplifting, good feel selection for the end of the season. Yep. Symbolism, no.
* Actually if we selected Don Lane it would be a token gesture for both Americans and for dead people

Re: Holmes to debut?
good luck to the guy .. he is obviously a very driven individual to be up to this level after only two years of knowing about football - I hope the club gave enough notice so his family could fly over for his debut ..
the one point I think is we all need to be mindful of expectations on him I for one will be happy if he gets a few taps and covers the ground im not fussed if he doesn't get too many disposals to be honest

yes he is no world beater but I don't think the selection is mere symbolism.
I have seen him play live maybe four times and he can play.
he is still just 25 so he has quite a few years left in him as a ruckman.
He will make mistakes, probably get caught with the ball a few times, be out of position as well, basically like just about every young player we have in the team
You are garbage - Enough said
