Geary needs to have a big year

Post: # 1537684Post Bluthy »

Geary really needs to try and go up a cog this year and become a really damaging player. He one of our few players hitting their prime at the 100 game mark. He works hard defensively and is damn tough. But he needs to start be really damaging going the other way and setting up forwards. He gives some good run from the back but his disposal has lacked penetration and vision. He needs to be really proactive and driving the team now taking over from the likes of Fisher and Dempster.

Big trouble brewing when Geary and Armitage are part of your core older group.
Effort and hardness galore but their poor disposal has flown under the radar with everyone focused on Clint Jones.
Hopefully the younger blokes will supersede them soon.

So does Richardson. The first two and a half quarters were dreadful. Skills of players were way down and a pedestrian attitude prevailed.

So Richo gets the credit for the bad bits but not the good bits?

I don't really get that. I thought their attitude was fantastic all game.

Geary cannot kick at all and his 'set shot' from 40 illustrates this.

If he knows he is such a bad kick, why was he surprised he could not slot it through from 40?

Delist at the end of the year, awful kicking and somehow worse than Jones

Not sure why he bothered swearing after that kick. He was never going to kick it.
He only hits targets 30m away in the backline going sideways or backwards under no pressure. Thats his limit.
His instruction should be to handball to Webster, Shenton or Savage every time he gets it.

What other side in the comp would he get into.

Tries hard. No one questions his endeavour. Just a hopelessly skilled and brainless player.

No, he actually handballs too much as he knows he cannot kick. First quarter when running clear all he could do was "bomb" in the direction of the small Saad who was outmarked. as the ball was over his head.

Lets face it, under pressure he just cannot use the ball well, by foot or hand. ie running in spaces did a shocking handall to Dunstan which got turned over for a goal, rather than being the start of a burt for us as Dunstan was in the clear, and then another Saint was in the clear beyond Dunstan to relay too.

He and Bruce both missed easy shots in the third.

At 101 games and almost 27 Geary is not going to change. Geary reminds me of Burkey, except that at Gear'ys curent age that Burkey had stepped up from being a good back pocket with so so skills. Whereas the Geary of today, is the same Geary as 4 years ago.

He has many excellent qualities. Hard nut, great work rate, good pressure etc etc......but every time he gets the ball you just little faith that he will use it well. And that is the StKilda problem at present is that we have so few good users of the ball.

The difference between winning and losing today was poor ball use. We mis-used the ball more often than GWS and that is why we lost.

ok lets have a look
had less clangers than stevo, 3 less possessions but was 20% better at disposal
took 9 marks
had 6 rebound 50s, 6 1%ers and 3 inside 50s
in truth we should prob delist him
case closed

How?

The bloke cannot kick even as a link-man. His disposal efficiency (albeit crap) is masked due to him playing a loose role or just a random running around the field role.

What does he actually do whilst we are at it?

The bloke cannot kick 40 meters.

The bloke has terrible decision-making skills.

The bloke struggle to hit targets even uncontested.

If you have a hard on/wet dream over him, fine.

The question remains, how?

I wouldn't be comparing Stevens game to Gearys. Night and day difference. The fact that the stats suggest Geary was better shows how useless they are.

Instead of looking at stats, I prefer to watch the game. And Gearys turn overs and headless chook decision making are what I judge him on. Not some numbers on paper which are realistically inaccurate.

Webster would take his spot and make us substantially better immediately.

Actually lol at those comparing Burke to Geary. May as well compare Maister to Plugger.
Almost offensive to Burke. Top 5 player in the comp in his prime and a saints great. Honestly people.

My comparison to Burke was to point out that Burkey kept improving. Geary has not. Burkey started as a back pocket and became a great mid. Geary started as a back pocket and remains that at best.

Fair enough. I jumped the gun a bit. The unwavering support for him baffles me, so seeing Burke's name mentioned really ruffled the feathers.
Although I'm of the opinion Burke was a star from pretty much day 1, aged 17. Yes, started in the bp, but a star nonetheless.

Too many bad disposals directly result in opposition goals. Has a crack but a measure of our improvement is when Geary is no longer in our best 22.

Great warrior but too often kills us with turnovers when under no pressure. And they usually arent just regular turnovers either. He has a real talent for the full 180 degree turnover. Meaning we are attacking and all our players are running into attacking positions and somehow he manages to put the opposition into an attacking position. A full 180. Hed be better off just aiming for boundary most of the time.
