" FORMER Crows forwards Jared Petrenko and Shaun McKernan will join St Kilda’s pre-season on Monday morning in a bid to extend their careers at a new home.
Petrenko and McKernan, both 24, have been invited to train with the Saints for three weeks after talks between the club and the players’ management.
Manager Michael Doughty of Elite Sports Properties said both were desperate for a second chance.
“We’ve talked to a lot of clubs and hopefully they’re a good fit at St Kilda,’’ Doughty said. “This is a chance to show what they can do.”

The only thing Shaun McKernan could do for our club is perhaps make Tom Lee and the rest of our existing young talls work harder for their spots. If he ever pulls on a jersey I'd die of shock.

Re: permission to train
Prefer McKernan over petrenko. Could do the Stanley job, hang around the forward line and do nothing.
You are garbage - Enough said
Re: permission to train
Agree that Petrenko is definitely not the answer. I see McKernan providing decent backup and similar potential to Stanley so there is some merit in looking at him.
I'd love to look at Luke Thompson too, but that seems unlikely.
Word is we have invited Hunt to train with us also, but I can't see him taking up the offer as other clubs will have him on their main list.

Re: permission to train
I'm not against Mckernan coming to us via the rookie draft, bit of insurance/depth on our list, can play Ruck, forward & back.
Hopefully he can turn his career around for the better.

Re: permission to train
Maybe McKernan needs a different coach instead of Sanderson to take the next step at senior level. A few Adelaide players didn't come on apparently as the Crows would have liked, so maybe one of the reasons Sando got the chop. I can't see any other ready made or close to ready made big forwards lining up to join us.

Played Pods instead, going for ladder position instead of developing younger players.spert wrote:Maybe McKernan needs a different coach instead of Sanderson to take the next step at senior level. However Sanderson is gone and Adelaide still cut him. Who is ahead of him at Adelaide?

Re: permission to train
I'm sure both of these guys would still have a lot to offer another AFL club as they are still young, and everyone deserves a second chance, but I'm not sure we should be the one's to give it to them.

Now Taylor Hunt is training with us.
Any more rejects getting a go at Seaford?

Re: permission to train
Well Hunt is always one of the top few trainers at Geelong, and McKernan might scare the bejesus out of Lee, White etc so it might just be orchestrated to keep the kids keen and firing early on.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Now Taylor Hunt is training with us.

Re: permission to train
Same for Petrolkinko he was shoved aside for Betts. Mc Kernan would only be of interest because there is potential to rookie him and play him as a backman for when we play against taller teams.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Played Pods instead, going for ladder position instead of developing younger players.spert wrote:Maybe McKernan needs a different coach instead of Sanderson to take the next step at senior level. Re: permission to train
With our list age profile I think there is a serious possibility we will give one of these guys a chance on the rookie list.
Re: permission to train
Hope we get both. Seriously though neither are likely to be picked up or I will spew.

Re: permission to train
Aren't they just training with us to get into condition for some team to (hopefully for them) pick them up and we have been kind enough to let them train with us? I'm sure they would prefer to make a main list somewhere else if they can.
I don't see the big deal in letting extra players do part of a pre-season with us. It's not like we're going to give away too many secret plays or anything.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

I hoping none and expecting none to get picked up by any other club. Hope they do though as long as it isn't us.

McKernan back up forward - probably a Maister upgrade
Petrenko - probably an upgrade on Milera.
One thing is certain with our young underdeveloped list we will have LTI's. There two plus Schneider gives us experience and backup.
That would be the thinking, it would certainly not to be for development of these players.
They would not be part of our future, certainly not Schneider, but who knows, Petrenko, or McKernan could surprise and become a long term member.
They are not out and out spuds, and the Saints have signalled they are not desperate to top up the list but are in full on rebuild mode.
Maybe look a bit longer at the full strategy of the Saints and if they go down this path I can see the logic in it.

Im sure many see the logic in it but I don't because I don't rate either player and they are nearly middle aged for footy players. I'd rather take a punt on an unknown that become a Milne or a Sweeney but at least we tried. Playing safe by getting proven ordinary footballers makes the club still an ordinary football side. We shouldn't have Schneider on our rookie list either. Lets use it 4 young kids IMO.
