Re: History of Assistant coaches at the Saints
Alan Davis was reserves coach who took over from the Doc when he was ill.
When I was growing up there was one assistant coach who was the reserves coach. Clubs had a part time skills coach as well and that was about it.

Pretty sure that Stan was a specialist/skills coach under Kenny.

Prior to being our coach, Stan Alves was on a Footy show of a Thursday night with Crackers Keenan and Beverley O'Connor.

Re: History of Assistant coaches at the Saints
Always thought the following did a good job:
Tudor - will be next cab off the rank for a senior AFL gig IMO.
Laidley - despite DL leaving because he had enough working for SW, thought he did a reasonable job with our midfield. Lenny etc. speak highly of him.
SOS - best backline in 60 years in '09. Not all his responsibility but deserves a lot of credit.
Rendell - good tactician, great recruiter, he was a bee's proverbial from getting the Hawks job instead of Clarko in '04.
Burke - thought he did a good job with the mids when he was an assistant under GT. Didn't like GT so that ended.
Few duds in there though
Always hard to tell from outside the club, and no doubt when you're successful, your assistants look better.

Ken Sheldon was an assistant and Springvale coach in the early 2000s under Grant Thomas, before then moving to that football manager type position before Lyon was appointed.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley and Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson both had long apprenticeships before landing senior positions.
Each had very brief stints at the Saints on the way to becoming two of the most respected coaches in the AFL.
After his playing career came to an end at the end of 1997, Clarkson spent a year as the runner for his former team Melbourne before joining the Saints in 1999 as an assistant to new coach Tim Watson.
Clarkson coached the Saints to a Grand Final appearance, before losing to an Essendon team that won off the back of a solid performance up forward from a young Stephen Milne.
It was the last year of an AFL reserves competition and Clarkson moved on to Werribee in the revamped VFL team the following year.
Hinkley joined the Saints in 2001 as an assistant to his former Geelong coach Malcolm Blight. His tenure came to an end shortly after Blight’s early departure and he moved on to coach Bell Park in the Geelong Football League.
