Good Friday Footy!
At last the evil dictator is gone and the new bloke predictably gives the long overdue go ahead for GF footy.
Sadly there is no talk of us being involved, but I for one would love it if we got a gig.
Thoughts?

i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.
Re: Good Friday Footy!
The timing couldn't be worse with us being an ordinary footy team for the next couple of years and not likely to put on a great spectacle. Whilst I like the tradition of the same game on Anzac day, I think GF footy could be circulated around various teams for variety and fairness.

Yeah I don't think it'll be us just yet, should they mix it up between seasons. Melbourne, North Melbourne and the Bulldogs are all in more exciting and - perhaps I'm going early re: Bulldogs after Sunday - relevant positions than we are, so a marquee game early in a promising season for those teams would be fitting.

Don't care for Good Friday games one way or the other - but saying that, if ever a fixture was meant to be, surely it's gotta be Saints vs Demons?

But that might not go down too well with certain groups if the Demons were to prevaildesertsaint wrote:Don't care for Good Friday games one way or the other - but saying that, if ever a fixture was meant to be, surely it's gotta be Saints vs Demons?

Re: Good Friday Footy!
Your kidding yourself if you think we will ever have a marque game. Even at the height of our powers, we were a a average, sometimes poor drawer.

Re: Good Friday Footy!
It should rotate between ALL clubs.
Same for ANZAC day.
Same for QB Holiday.
Same for season opener.
It's called "even playing field".

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

SP you should take some of the credit for this decision. Clearly your annual Good Friday campaign has reached the right people and contributed to this monumental decision.saintspremiers wrote:At last the evil dictator is gone and the new bloke predictably gives the long overdue go ahead for GF footy.

Now can you get them to make it Saints Versus Demons.

Of course there's no talk of us being involved. We're on the bottom of the ladder i.e. no one wants to watch us play.

Well that means there wont always be a game in melbourne. Also arent they likely the clubs making the money anyway?

I heard that donating money to the appeal was how they sweetened the deal to get the happy clappers on board...a bit of coin in the hat makes them a lot more agreeable.plugger66 wrote:mullet wrote:Doesn't the money go to the good Friday appeal.plugger66 wrote:mullet wrote:They should make it the grand final replay each year

Re: Good Friday Footy!
I like the idea that two teams get if the first year ( have a leaning toward Norf cause they pioneered Friday football)
Then the winner plays in the next years game ( holds the title) the looser goes to the bottom of the list and another team gets a crack at them.
Had enough of the same two teams playing major games every year.
This way the benefit gets shared around

Again that can only work if they are prepared to have a game interstate every so often.
Re: Good Friday Footy!
They said something like "It will be worked in with the RCH appeal", which means "we'll cross to the footy when it starts and cross back to the appeal at the breaks". Tin cans in the stands will be the afl's contribution to the appeal.

I don't buy that, at worst we may see a slightly reduced figure, but it would be a worthwhile sacrifice.plugger66 wrote:Enrico_Misso wrote:It should rotate between ALL clubs.

With a rotating blockbuster scenario we may only get 1.58 billion instead of 1.6 billion for the TV rights.
Blockbusters should be earnt by high performing teams and then there wouldn't be a huge issue for the networks anyway… previous years GF teams play anzac (Haw v Freo) the next year, 3 & 4 (geel v syd) play QB… they would be huge games for ratings anyway.
Reward for effort, not historic entitlement.
Coll v Ess get huge crowds regardless of the timeslot, they don't need the extra exposure every single year.

I think that last line answers your question about TV rights. If it has bugger all effect then why do the TV stations have such input into the fixture. it has huge effects because that is when TV stations sell their advertising.
And everyonr just refuses to realise that games cant be held in Melbourne each year if we things like last years GF teams. That would be great on Anzac day when the game is in Sydney.
