Cheap Stats from Kick-outs - Montagna singled out

Post: # 1458642Post Con Gorozidis »

Anyone see footy crappified last night?

Issue was getting a 'kick stat' from kick-outs when you kick to yourself and play on.
They highlighted that Joey does it all the time and that it should not count as a 'kick' on the stats.

Ahh the important issues

Should be a stat, can gain 15 meters more out of it up the ground. 15 meters for a kick right :P

I remember when stats were first in vougue a ruckman named Gary Dempsy had the ball kicked to him alone in the back pocket, after almost every point kicked, he was a good ruckman but I think he was helped by weight of numbers of marks and kicks. Come to think of it I think Brad Hardy won every award going (including the Brownlow?) by doing exactly he same thing.
Hardy had seven goal kicked on him in the back pocket and got three Brownlow votes because he had heaps of uncontested , short back pocket marks and kicks.
If it helps Montagna win a brownlow or a car or a pair if socks, I say good luck to him

I don't think it should be a stat if you immediately kick it after playing on. Maybe you have to run 15 metres (equivalent of a kick) to count as a stat.

Gwilt had 7 kicks, 3 of which were kick-ins
Webster had 4 kicks, 4 of which were kick-ins
Montagna had 24 kicks, 6 of which were kick-ins

It's not a hard fought possession, but it still takes enormous skill, turn it over here and it's a goal over your head. A lot harder than a un-manned switch kick across the back half which we see a lot of.

there must be a daily topic list - they were talking about it on fox as well
I used to subtract a minimum 5 from NDS for the exact same reason - he was the king of the 1-2
two possessions and run & carry yardage

So if the opposition kick it out of bounds on the full

Count the possession?

When Joey does it he's looking for extra distance. He carries it 15 and kicks it 65-70 from goal.
I saw Murphy kick it to himself and then chip it 10 metres. Those ones are ridiculous. If Joey plays on, runs it 15, kicks it 50 to a player streaming down the wing who then kicks it lace out to roo on the lead Joey shouldn't get a stat for setting up a goal?
Does a player who kicks in straight to the opposition get a clanger put to his name?

I just realised that I had completely missed the premise of this thread… I'm a nuffy.

Is that little dinky kick to yourself counted as a kick as well as the following kick?

Agree, that shouldn't really be counted on the stat sheet as 2 kicks…

Montagna still had a pretty bloody decent game with 12 clearances, 7 tackles & a goal…

No the dinky kick is not counted as a possession.

Okay cheers, well I can't see the problem then... A kick out from a behind is a lot harder than half the kicks we see.

The kick in stats for a point are traditionally not counted. Why? Probably because the kicks were not earned. But they are usually taken by a player with good disposal skills and good decision making. Contrast this with the free kick for out on the full - all you have to be is near where the ball went out - so not really earned either. Kick in from out on the full / deliberate are fairly rare so they wont skew the stats much but those from a point can. One consideration not taken into account is that the person kicking in is essentially taken out of the equation for obtaining the next stat because they already have it. I personally believe that the act of kicking the ball to self is an obsolete hangover from our game's past, and forces the player to play on or be tackled in the worst position to give away a free kick. The imperative of success is part of the earning of that stat. I think the stat is earned.

I'm all for the opposite, include the dinky kick as a kick, I mean, we are calling it a kick in our discussion aren't we? You have to kick it to yourself to play on from a kick in, so how can it not be called a kick? When is a stat not a stat?
