Matt Finnis for CEO?

Post: # 1435156Post remboy »

According to The age, the Saints have decided on Matt Finnis , the Players Association boss, for the the CEO position. The club have said they are in discussions with one person but haven't named names.
No idea on whether this is good, bad or indifferent.

Bit more on The Age. Apparently he has a legal background, has a good relationship with the AFL and is a supporter of equalisation. Best of all he lives in Beaumaris so shouldn't have a problem getting to Seaford.

Also from the same article, Jake Niall is suggesting that arguably the Saints have more potential for growth than most other struggling teams, given that we have a stronger latent supporter base (mainly in Melbourne's southern and south-eastern suburbs) than the Bulldogs, North Melbourne and Melbourne.

That is also great to see positivity about that aspect of our club in the media.

Do we actually have a larger "dormant" supporter base than Melbourne?

Interesting way to go, if this article is on the money.

Reports a month ago were saying we'd approached the AFL for assistance in appointing a new CEO.

Matt Finnis is a guy who is talked about as future AFL CEO material, so I wonder if he's been courted by higher powers, as a "this would look really good on your resume" type of deal??

So then we have a transitional CEO who's using us as a stepping stone to the big office??

Listen, even if that were the case, if he spent 5 years at the club and oversaw a turnaround on and off field and then left the club in a strong consolidated position (and a flag?) and moved on, I would see that as a positive.

It's much easier to recruit a new CEO, and for he/she to succeed, if they are coming into a strong club.

Plus hopefully that would eventually give us a "friend" in the top job

I asked the same question because I wondered how that is quantified objectively but as I previously said the pleasing thing is that there is someone in the media talking us up in a positive manner and that can only be helpful when it comes to membership and finances. Perception is everything and that is why clubs like Hawthorn and Collingwood exploit it to their advantage at every point especially when it comes to pumping up supporter strength and numbers. Having said that I think Jake isn't probably too far from the truth when you consider how much our club grows when times are good. It seems like every second person is a Saints person when we make Grand Finals.

He is awesome. He is always on the front foot trying to get the big clubs to agree to equalisation and Kochies idea of it being compensation to smaller clubs not handouts was a Finnis concept. He has been very good as the AFLPA head and been the most outspoken to date. As a few have said he's got a huge future scope and ambition, he's not some old guy who thinks he has done a little bit in business so he can smash the gig out while being half into it.

They're all "transitional" CEOs - always thinking about their next big job. But the only way they get another job is by being good at this one, so that basically aligns their interests with ours.

Good call, gringo. If we get him, at least we'll get someone who's hungry to further his reputation and standing in the game. It sounds as though he has greater ambitions, but I'm happy for him to use us as a stepping stone. If he does well, everyone will benefit. He has a number of incentives to do well. As Paul Keating famously said, "In a race, always back self interest. At least you know it will be trying!"

this. cant believe were worrying about that. "s*** what happens if he's really good at his job and pulls us out of this mess and then moves on"

thats a kin to not buying a lotto ticket because "s*** what happens if i win, i dont know what to do with the money"
