Patrick Karnezis is expected to undergo a medical at the Saints on Monday - with the Saints reportedly showing interest after Collingwood all but withdrew theirs.

Is he any good we are apparently showing interest

When he was going to Collingwood then he was useless. A GOP at best. Now there's a sniff he might come to us.... He's the attacking mid that we need and who has the potential to become an AA within 3 years.

Hasn't he been described as an outside player with average skills and not that good above his head. I would rather see us give Markworth & Sipposs a go as the tall flanker type. But I was surprised when we picked up Roberton so my recent history on marginal players is not good.

He is a guy who looks a million bucks at times but for what ever reason hasn't taken off. He is a Ross Lyon special, could be a steal or a flop.

http://www.footytragic.com/blog/2013-pr ... -karnezis/

Karnezis is actually a player I was half tempted to write about last week considering his fantastic pre-season, however I opted to have a bit of a look at him first and I’m very glad I did.

Karnezis was a player I quite liked in his breakout year of 2011 – he played 11 games as a forward, kicking 17 goals and averaging around 8 disposals and four marks a game. He looked to have really cemented his spot in the team, playing 11 of the final 12 games of the year.

Unfortunately, 2012 was a much different story for him, managing only seven games, and was given the sub vest on five of these occasions. Again he was played up forward, managing to average a goal a game. In the three games he wasn’t sub, he averaged 10 disposals, 2 goals, 7 marks and 2 tackles – all pretty reasonable numbers for a second year player.

The real story is actually what he was doing whilst not wearing Brisbane colours in 2012 – whilst he spent 7 games in the seniors, the other 14 games were spent playing for Brisbane reserves side in the NEAFL. One slight on his game had been his fitness, so he was trialled through the midfield to help develop this weakness into a strength. It paid dividends for him as he went on to be the highest vote getter in the Grogan Medal for the Brisbane reserves.

Despite just increasing his running power and endurance, Karnezis became a fantastic ball winner in the reserves competition, averaging 28 disposals, including six games where he surpassed the 30-touches mark. These are great numbers to suggest the midfield is a great place to see him develop – he has also not lost his ability to pull in the marks or kick a few goals too.

Over the off-season, Karnezis has spent his time training with the midfielders to further develop his craft – this is also a sign that Vossy is prepared to play him as a midfielder in 2013 and not just stick him back in the forward line. We got to see him in action on the weekend in the first of Brisbane’s two NAB Cup games. In the game he played 100% across the wing, showing good decision making and ball-skills – and most importantly, he showed a knack of finding the footy; he finished the game with 10 disposals (7 kicks, 3 handballs), 3 marks and 2 tackles.

We know these initial NAB Games are a bit a of fluff and they aren’t the sorts of games that should make you want to do a hundred changes to your squad. But it is a good chance to see some of the younger players and where the coach may be trialling them. I daresay Vossy would have been impressed with Karnezis’ performance – as I said above, he used the ball well, got plenty of it and looked confident. One position on the wing for the Lions will be taken up by Pearce Hanley, but I daresay Karnezis is the front runner for the other.

Drafted at pick 25 in a compromised draft
Has played 21 games in 3 years on the list of a club that has been in the bottom 3rd of the table for most of that time despite having a pretty good run with injuries
In those games averaged 8.7 disposals, 3.8 marks, 1.7 tackles and 1.1 goals

He only played 3 games this year despite high possession numbers in the reserves.

There still every chance that he would have gone 25 in an uncompromised draft??

When you we speak about a draft being compromised it is only that your team get later picks than they would be getting in a normal draft

Im with devilhead on that logic. Draft order is draft order. Its just 'compromised' because those two sides had all the picks so everyone else got pushed back.

(However there were some talent who were not in the drafts at all - eg Hogan, Josh Bruce, O"Meara. So they were compromised a little bit meaning 25 was probably 27).

In Karnezis' draft year, he was pick 25. Gold Coast had pre-listed and traded 7 players prior to draft day, not all of which would've been picked up early, but maybe one or two could've.

In 2009, 12 seventeen year olds were selected by Gold Coast. A good chance most were going to be top 25 selections the next year. 10 'local' selections and two zone selections were also taken that year, Zac Smith, Tom Hickey, Liam Patrick, who knows but its safe to save pick 25 was more likely to be pick 35 or worse in what was a weak draft. Yes, they 'could've' rated him there regardless, but I strongly disagree that he was the 25th best player in that draft.

Having watched most of Brisbanes home games this year (living in Qld), I think Karnezis has been starved of opportunities. After a great NAB series, he was vested in his few senior appearances. He looks very comfortable when actually on the ground, and I thought looked to have a great future. I guess the question is why didn't Vossy rate him. Personally I think they had a few just like him.
Where he was selected in the draft is irrelevant, there is a long list of stars that were late draft picks. Daniel Hannebery at 30 is one that comes to mind
