Importance of trading and salary cap space

Looking at both Freo and Hawthorn and the key personnel they have which have played for other AFL clubs. Hawthorn especially, the majority of these have been picked up through astute trading and the ability to have cap space available to identify specifics and be able to afford them.

Hawthorn: Hale, Gibson, Guerra, Burgoyne, Gunston, Lake,

Hale and Guerra were got relatively cheap for the specific skills they bring to the table
Smart cap room allowed for Burgoyne, Gunston, and Gibson
Lake attracted to opportunity to win and really the only short term recruitment they have made ( will play only a few years)


Freo : McPharlin, Dawson, Pearce,

Pearce and Dawson the big ones here . identified a specific need and recruited players specific for that who will be there for at least 5 years.

Hopefully the Hawthorn model is where we are heading ( and not just because of Phelchan) where cap space allows for specific recruitment of quality and combined with come early draft picks

Trading for established players is just another skill that progressive thinking coaches will need to exploit to their advantage in the future as the talent pool shrinks further from the drain of an 18 club comp. Syndey have been doing it well for years and you watch Freo go hard for an immediate replacement for Sandilands and Pavlich.

Clarko has been ahead of the curve on his selection of recycled players to compliment his teams rebuild and refurb.

The established players they traded in are playing well. The fringe players they traded in are still fringe players.
Delaney & Bruce are both fringe players. Anyone who expects either of those 2 to somehow turn into a Brian Lake type just by pulling on a Saints guernsey is kidding themselves.

Apart from Guerra, all those players chose Hawthorn as their destination club during trade week.

It makes you look like trade geniuses when players want to come to your club.

But if we do target players then we need to find players similar to shaun grigg from richmond.Cant get a gig and moves and becomes a solid 22 player.
