New Saints President?- The Age
St Kilda's bid to reinvigorate its fortunes will be overseen by AVJennings boss Peter Summers, who has emerged as the club's new president following a series of board negotiations.
Summers will take over after several candidates, including high-profile Queen's counsel Jack Rush, chose not to contest the position.
Summers, a board member for five years, will replace trucking boss Greg Westaway, who is stepping down after serving his maximum term of six years.
''As a member of the club for well over 40 years, it is an honour to be elected as the incoming president of the St Kilda Football

Re: New Saints President?- The Age
Good luck to him.
We need a breath of fresh air.
We'll be lucky to crack 25K members next year.
He can build houses, let's hope he can build football clubs.

What about a high profile useless president?SaintWodonga wrote:I think we should go for a high profile president.

Damn Australia has some boring industries. The last guy drove trucks around. This one builds houses. One other option was a lawyer, another ran supermarkets. Can we get some real business please? Make some s*** and export it. At least mining brings some cash into the country.

Yeah, only Australia has transport, construction, a legal system and a need for groceries.bergholt wrote:Damn Australia has some boring industries. The last guy drove trucks around. Re: New Saints President?- The Age
Nope. But Australia is a small, boring economy because we don't do much except sell stuff to each other. Our only export industries are resources and agriculture. Why can't we be more like Sweden or Finland, selling mobile phones and technology to the world? They're both much smaller than us but have globally recognised brands. We've got nothing like that. Disappointing.Beno88 wrote:Yeah, only Australia has transport, construction, a legal system and a need for groceries.bergholt wrote:Damn Australia has some boring industries. Seems some people already aren't happy having this bloke as President even though he hasn't really started yet.
I guess some people just enjoy being negative and miserable
Anyway, welcome Peter

Doesn't disappoint me, and I've never owned any Swedish or Finnish mobile phones, cars etc. Must be some reason so many Europeans are trying to get work in Australia at the moment.bergholt wrote:Nope. John Trimbole ( Formerly Trimbole ) used to sponsor a racing car ( the Daily Planet Commodore ).bergholt wrote:Damn Australia has some boring industries. The last guy drove trucks around. Maybe he'd be a more interesting choice if you could get him on board.
Personally I think he'd be a better fit for Carlton, and its good that we are tied in with "boring industries".
Re: New Saints President?- The Age
I guess if we're just selling s*** in between ourselves then we'll be fine as long as we keep immigration high. Without that we're going to have a problem keeping the economy purring.spert wrote:Doesn't disappoint me, and I've never owned any Swedish or Finnish mobile phones, cars etc. Must be some reason so many Europeans are trying to get work in Australia at the moment.

Re: New Saints President?- The Age
What is the differance between a President and a Chairman, any governance differances?
From what I can gather we have always had a president.
Afl media have lazily named Peter as new Chairman

Re: New Saints President?- The Age
I wish someone would explain that to the politicians. One of the worst comments I ever heard was regarding the closure of the Heinz food plant in Dandenong.bergholt wrote:I guess if we're just selling s*** in between ourselves then we'll be fine as long as we keep immigration high. "It didn't matter that the plant was closing ,because they were building a new shopping centre in Narre Warren South that would provide just as many jobs as were being lost "
Maybe we can all just look after each others kids each day and collect childcare subsidies.

Wi-fi, Cochlear implant?
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell
Re: New Saints President?- The Age
The Hills Hoist? The stump-jump plough? Plastic bank notes? How many of these inventions are being successfully manufactured and exported to the world?Bernard Shakey wrote:Wi-fi, Cochlear implant?
The cochlear implant I'll give you, that's a great invention and one that an Australian company has very successfully commercialised. They bring in hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
Wifi being "invented in Australia" is complete crap. A team at the CSIRO put together some tech that already existed, using it in an effective way but one that others had also been doing for years. But CSIRO patented it first, then completely failed to make any useful products using it. They gave up and since then they've flown around the world suing people. This isn't an example of innovation, it's an example of the fundamental problems with the patent system.
As a country we're good at sport. But we're s*** at making products the world wants to buy.

It might be named after a Russian, but a quick straw poll of the office reveals that none of the foreigners here had heard of it before they came to Australia. I don't reckon it's a massive international blockbuster.plugger66 wrote:Pavlova.bergholt wrote:As a country we're good at sport. But we're s*** at making products the world wants to buy.
