Interesting Stats from games won and lost
Found this written by Scott Barby on the North Melbourne Website very interesting. To locate the Saints main weakness you only have to look at the usage in wins and losses to see that if you take away their space and ability to spread, combined with winning first use, you’re in the box seat for four points. The Saints love to run and spread, ranking seventh for uncontested marks and play on percentage, although when the game is played on contested terms, they struggle to compete. Last week the Bulldogs continued that theme, obliterating the Saints at stoppages which comes as no surprise given St. Kilda’s ranking of sixteenth for contested possession and seventeenth for clearances.
Limiting the Saints’ space will be crucial as they rank number one in the competition for kicking long to advantage and marks on lead, thanks largely to the impeccable work rate and presence of Nick Riewoldt. They rank third for marking percentage when venturing inside fifty but opportunities have been limited with the Saints ranking fifteenth for inside fifties. When St. Kilda do manage to get the ball in the forward line they are quite damaging and register a score 42.4% of the time, the fifth best percentage in the AFL.
Saints in wins Kicks Kicking Efficiency Disposals Contested Possession Marks
St Kilda 224 69.6% 408 143 114
Opposition 176 62.8% 299 122 74
Differential +48 +6.9% +109 +21 +40
Saints in losses Kicks Kicking Efficiency Disposals ContestePossesion Marks
St Kilda 198 63.4% 330 129 89
Opposition 219 65.2% 368 141 101
Differential -21 -.17% -38 -12 -12
Basically what it comes down to is that we have 26 less kicks between wins and loses, our kicking efficency drops by 6.2%, we have 78 less disposals in a loss, 14 less contested possesions and 25 less marks. No doubt the theme of the week and has been most weeks is to win the contested possesion.

We lost to the Dogs because we had a limping Lenny and Jack Steven as our only guys likely to get a clearance. Armo will help but I hope Saunders gets some time in there. He has something Selwood like about him. We could do with recruiting a big in and under mid with our high pick.

He is nothing like Selwood in any way he plays. keep him mainly out of the midfield until next season. No need to rush him. he can play midfield for Sandy occasionally.

Disgusting. How can we have become so bad so quickly?Last week the Bulldogs continued that theme, obliterating the Saints at stoppages which comes as no surprise given St. Kilda’s ranking of sixteenth for contested possession and seventeenth for clearances.

lack of workrate and dedication to giving 100% of yourself all the time on field by the senior players bar Rooey.stinger wrote:bigcarl wrote:Disgusting. Amongst other things, I think when Lyon left, a few senior players took their foot off the accelerator as I don't think Watters is an intense kind of coach. Of course losing Goddard and Gram had to make some difference, and we haven't had Lenny to guide the young guys in the midfield, and then there's Gilbert who was starting to get used to playing up the ground when he got injured. No wonder we are not getting hands on ball and are down the rung in most stats.

The only team ranked below us on clearances is Geelong. I'm not sure that's much of a predictor of ladder position.bigcarl wrote:Disgusting. What of contested possessions? How do Geelong rank in that out of interest?bergholt wrote:The only team ranked below us on clearances is Geelong. That will upset the tap ruckmen brigade.

Ah interesting. I guess that shows that stats don't always tell the full story. Ladder position and win-loss ratio generally do, though, and ours is disgusting.
