Re: Gilbert & Jones
Two of our worst kicks and decision makers...
No i don't think we do, i think we should continue to blood our younger players, they were great servants but imo if we want to move forward they a depth...

Re: Gilbert & Jones
Well Jones was dropped, so obviously not in our best 22, and no we didn't miss them.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

They said he missed through soreness.

Re: Gilbert & Jones
Good question...very hard to support more than one ordinary disposer in a team these days, no matter what their strengths
You can actually see sides corralling Jones so that he has to kick it and turn it over rather than rushing him to give the handball

Nee!

Who's they? I heard Scott say, on radio and TV, they preferred Geary as a tagger this week.plugger66 wrote:Bernard Shakey wrote:Well Jones was dropped, so obviously not in our best 22, and no we didn't miss them.

Re: Gilbert & Jones
Not at all. Roberton is doing an excellent job in Gilbert's role and Geary/Ray are both far better for the run-with role.
Interesting that Fisher and Dempster both had their best game for the year with both of them back to a more familiar role.

Re: Gilbert & Jones
Even though both have positive attributes, neither can kick. The sooner we get rid of those who can't kick, the sooner we'll start getting better.

Re: Gilbert & Jones
Wow - I can't believe someone asked whether we missed these two.
Hell no.
Gilbert's kicking has got progressively worse as his career has gone on and is just a liability with the football (a couple of fluke goals this year excepted). Never ever seen a player so regularly kick the ball out on the full as Gilbert. That, together with his Raph-like decision making skills makes for one dangerous hombre for us.
Jones has been a cracking tagger and a supreme athlete. His ability to shut down opposition mids has been as good as anyone in the past 5 years (I rate him with Ling). But, he is one of those blokes that can't get out of the way of the footy and sometimes you just don't want him to have it in his hands. Disposal by hand is ok, pretty good decision maker, awful kick. There should be two golden rules in AFL footy - Daniel Rich should always kick it / Gilbert & Jones should never kick it.
It's awesome going to the footy watching kids having a crack and playing for their careers. Newnes/Ross/Wright/Webster et al will never develop to the level required at Sandy (nor quickly enough).

Jones is dispensible. Not yet so sure about Gilbert. Hasn't he (Gilbo) recently signed a contract extension??

Re: Gilbert & Jones
Gilbert is tall, strong, fast, flexible, can mark, tackle and run. A valuable asset tp most clubs.
Clint Jones is a good athlete, a gutsy ball winner, a solid tagger and team player. But he lacks skills. A valuable asset to a Ross Lyon game plan

Re: Gilbert & Jones
I reckon Gilbert now becomes more of an option up forward. He can take a mark, is a hard fast leader and will keep up forward pressure. He is a better option than a slow 2nd or 3rd tall like Kozzie and Hickey isn't really quite there yet for that sort of role.
Gilbert hurts us too much when running out of the back line and we now have very good kicks in Dempster, Gwilt, Roberton, and Fisher all who spot up players with good kicking efficiency.

Re: Gilbert & Jones
I wouldn't be getting too cocky. There is no way we can do without their experience and mature bodies being in the team over the next few years otherwise we will start to look like Melbourne. Ok so we know their weaknesses but hey they have played in a lot of big games, finals and Grand Finals against some really good opposition and they are two players that can set an excellent example to the younger guys and teach younger players how to prepare for a game and how to attack the ball and how to play with guts and never give up attitude, they are just a few their good qualities/strengths. Worth keeping for a little while longer IMO.

They said he missed through soreness.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
