Saints v Pies - Friday night footy - Preview / Discussion

Post: # 1326051Post SainterK »

Why not have a thread again dedicating to ins and outs, and news etc....

It's at Etihad, which is good for us considering they've smacked us around at the G in recent meetings. What works against us is they are rebounding from a loss, and a loss in which their acting captain described some of the players as front runners.

Injuries
Saints: None
Pies: Toovey (ACL)

Just thought I'd show you who has gone out and come into the side since they last met, crazy different really.

Out Goddard, Gram, Ray, Simpkin, Polo, Dunell
Ins Wright, Murdoch, Saunders, Ross, TDL, Lee

Potential Ins
Saints: Gwilt could be pushing for selection this week, Dunell also, Newnes also could be due back, Siposs maybe again, Hickey also
Pies: Jolly most likely back and Ball playing VFL this week

Personally I wouldn't change much and continue to reward the kids for their efforts, Gwilt in for Lee perhaps

Cloke remains the matchup that is our weakness, in saying that, wouldn't hurt to play Gilbert on him and see how he goes....he may not outbody him, but then nobody we have will...yet he has the potential to outread him on the play IMO.

Thoughts?

I really hope Watters sticks to his word and Milney plays a ressies game.

It was a dog act by Milne and very Judd like.

I think Rhys has to play Cloke and just keep using his reach and speed to negate him. I would try replacing Kosi with one of Hickey or White. He didn't look like he had any confidence left.

Push comes to shove...

I'd go

Gwilt Milne in for Lee TDL

Geary to midfield/forward

I would like to see Gilbert play on him with Stanley floating over as back up. one on one Cloke is so hard to beat.

Milne is back with the pack as far as our small forwards go, not much form and undisciplined. If form is a guide, he hasn't done anything to hold his place. The form of a few Saints at Sandy tomorrow will determine who comes and goes. Lee should stay in now that the maggies have lost a quality tall defender. TDL will probably go. Dunnell and Siposs must be close, as is Hickey..we can't run McEvoy in to the ground. Kosi was pretty ordinary in slippery conditions last night, but may go a little better on a dry surface with a game under his belt.

Milne has to play because either TDL or Saad deserved to be dropped. One will at least. Should be TDL. I think if Hickey does ok this week he must come in for Kosi. It is hard on TV to see second efforts but there didnt like many if any last night. People wanted him in to help the small forwards. Well it was there to see last night. it didnt help them. I expect 2 changes with Lee very lucky to keep his spot but he would want to show something this week. You can usually see something in players even if they struggle. havent seen anything special with Lee.

If a forward goes out and a defender comes in what does that do to our structure? Send Stanley forward again? He's looking OK at the back (except for giving away a stupid blocking free in a ruck contest.)

The sooner the TDL experiment ends the better.

Cloke will break Fred Fanning's record!

Coming off a loss and considering they pasted Richmond surely they'll clean us up.

Our only hope is Roo kicking 5 and getting 30 touches.

Watters knows what he is doing and I trust him 100%.
TDL played under Watters at Subiaco in the WAFL so he knows his abilities.
Dean Laidley- another West Aussie.
Next draft we will get Mary & Eileen Smith, who own a cafe near Watters home in Perth, because he knows them well.
The WA connections will forge a new winning culture.

Changes I'd make

OUT: TDL, Lee, Jones
IN: Siposs, Milne, Hickey

Lee and TDL are a mile off AFL level, Milne and Saad have both been ordinary but have credits in the bank and could trouble Collingwood. Kosi is needed for structure - no point in sending White out to FF to ruin his confidence and rack up injuries ala Kosi and Goose early on. Simpkin very unlucky not to be in the side but we already lack a bit of run with a lot of guys who can't rotate through the middle. Hickey to take 60% of the ruck work and spend some time forward for the first 80 minutes before being subbed off. Keeps McEvoy fresh for the whole game and gives us extra run in the final quarter.

B: Dempster, Stanley, Geary
HB: Wright, Gilbert, Fisher
C: Montagna, Hayes, Dal Santo
HF: Siposs, Riewoldt, Saunders
F: Milne, Koschitzke, Saad

Foll: McEvoy, Armitage, Steven
Int: Ross, Roberton, Hickey (Murdoch)

Emg: Ray, Simpkin, Ledger

In. Ray, Siposs, Hickey
Out. TDL, Saunders, Kosi

Experience with Ray against good opposition on a fast track essential, Milne will play twos, hickey is such a better bet than Kosi. Siposs is a much better option than TDL, play a medium marking tall (siposs) with Roo and Lee forward might just stretch them with Toovey out, Saad small forward, would like to see Dal up in forward line as well to break the tag, much like Cotchin played tonight or GAJ playes for GC.

If we stop Cloke and Jones can shut down pendlebury, Montagna runs with Swan and we get our hands on it first..we have a shot. Unlikely shot but a shot.

Saad was okay, I thought. Pretty tough night for small forward, but he worked up the ground a bit. .

Kosi was Kosi, did some indescribably dumb things like the interchange infringement and nearly knocking himself out running into the back of Mike Pyke. His major problem is is lack of leg speed and aerobic fitness, and this is why he doesn't present himself in the right position up forward and it's why he finds himself 5 metres off the contest and ends up in the Mike Pyke situation. His ruck work, as I've always maintained, is ineffective. His one asset is his ability to take a contested mark. Hickey is a good tap ruckman who can play in the ruck for longer periods than Kosi, and poor McEvoy desperately needs a proper chop out. Siposs may well have to play as the third tall, perhaps switching with Gilbert occasionally.

in: Hickey, Milne, Siposs

Out: Koschitzke, TDL, and Murdoch.
