AFL Want Evidence? I give them StKilda v Filth 2012
Any doubt about match fixing and corruption should be ended after the viewing if this game. Just watched the replay of that game and if three umpires werent instructed to get that result they should be sacked. You simply couldnt get so many decisions in a game wrong. All one way mind you.

Seriously that game was off the charts . But the afl didnt make a peep at the time. Eddie is a very infleuntial man. WAY too influential imho. Something is not right.CURLY wrote:Any doubt about match fixing and corruption should be ended after the viewing if this game. I remember there was a fair bit of heat about the blatant bias shown to Collinwood that game. Next thing a nothing story about Milne teasing Harry O gets made up. Immediately the focus on the cheating is replaced.

Our good friend Dean Margetts was one of the umpires for that match !!
NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

I still cant watch those replays. The umpires interpretation leaves the game wide open for possible match fixing. Some of those decisions were more than ordinary especially some of the frees not paid.CURLY wrote:Any doubt about match fixing and corruption should be ended after the viewing if this game. Perhaps Sam Newman is correct and the umpires need to take a back seat.
They should only pay those that are blatantly obvious and be accountable for those that were obvious and not paid.
How easy would it be ATM for an umpire to fix a game. I certainly felt that way in the GF. Anyway It pisses me off to think about it. So I not going to

Wasn't the freekick count 9-0 in the last quarter?
An extraordinary statistic.

We would have drawn.
That gives us an extra two points and we still finish 9th.
That being said it was a bloody ordinary decision although the Pies played better for longer periods of time that night.
We did damn well to make it so closer and potentially gett-able though.

Why? Sometimes one team gives away more frees than the other.Enrico_Misso wrote:Wasn't the freekick count 9-0 in the last quarter?

Correct and sometimes umpires choose to ignore the actions if one team and not the other. This game was an example of that.bergholt wrote:Why? Sometimes one team gives away more frees than the other.Enrico_Misso wrote:Wasn't the freekick count 9-0 in the last quarter?

There is absolutely no doubt that the umpires decided the outcome of that match. And that was the finding after the match was reviewed by their own watchdog.

A game has rarely made me as mad as that one. First time I went into rave mode here on SS. A shocker of the first order.

Correct and it wasn't the only time we were blatantly dudded last season. As incompetent and biased an umpiring performance as I can remember and I've seen a few.CURLY wrote: Correct and sometimes umpires choose to ignore the actions if one team and not the other. This game was an example of that.

There's a difference between "incompetent" and "biased". In fact, incompetence would make it hard to be effectively biased because you'd be too bad at your job to have the desired effect.bigcarl wrote:As incompetent and biased an umpiring performance as I can remember and I've seen a few.

I believe that the match was swayed by one Dean Margetts… I think he was so emotionally effected by the Milne/Obrien exchange that he lost perspective of his job… I don't however buy that the AFL constructed the outcome.
First time I have ever seen a 50 metre penalty given because of language used between two players, as opposed to directed towards an umpire

True but we arent talking pies v east burwood. It is two fairly even professional sides.bergholt wrote:Why? Sometimes one team gives away more frees than the other.Enrico_Misso wrote:Wasn't the freekick count 9-0 in the last quarter?

9 0 is just out of the realms. 6 3 i can easily cop. Heck even 7 2 is possible.

The umpiring performance on that day set new standards for both incompetence and bias.

The umpiring was disgraceful.
But that doesn't make it corrupt.
If the umpires were colluding in match fixing, they would have umpired for St Kilda to win, the underdogs with the bigger odds, and therefore the bigger collect.

No they where umpiring for a result that suited the AFL. Collingwood lose far less chance of a home final.avid wrote:The umpiring was disgraceful.

Re: AFL Want Evidence? I give them StKilda v Filth 2012
It was obvious that night that one of the umps lost his objectivity in thr last quarter, became emotionally involved, and started actively umpiring "against" a particular player and club. He should have been banned from umpiring for life as a result.
The other two just made some mistakes, as they normally do (they made some in our favour earlier in the night).
Of course Sam Newman is right. The problem with our umpires is that the AFL has allowed/made them to feel they are as big a part of the game as the players. They are now like rugby union refs (who see themselves as the bosses of the game) rather than, say, soccer refs who think they've had a great night if nobody notices them. NRL referees used to be more like Union refs, but the powers that be have done a lot in recent years to take them out of the game, to good effect.
AFL has gone the opposite way, leading to plenty of embarrassment. Then they have put in draconian measures to try to stop criticism of the umps. This is the wrong way to go.
But I don't see any corruption. Just incompetence.

That particular game really sticks out in the memory, doesn't it?
There was no systematic corruption behind in, but by the end of the game the umpires were actually barracking for collingwood. They saw collingwood as the "good guys", and us the "bad guys." It was a disgusting display of ineptitude.
And a major factor in it was their hatred for steven milne, or rather, collingwood supporters hatred for steven milne, whose vitriol the umpires were swayed by. When asked after the game about the lack of free kicks given to milne, of which he shouldve got at least 3, and the crucial free kick given against him that wasnt there, Watters said: "Not all players are treated equally."
Steven Milne hasn't bean treated fairly by the umpires from day one of his career, and that will never change, much to my ongoing disgust. Remember the last game vs carlton last year? Milne was being molested all game without reward and it was only when the umpire belatedly awarded him a free kick after instruction from "upstairs" in the last quarter that he was finally allowed to play without being illegally impinged. The opposition know it, too, they know that you can break the rules against milne, because the umps never give him a free kick.
Its true that life isn't fair, but football is ridiculously unfair.
