The point of Yom Kippur is that is an entire day of religous observance by even those who may be considered more liberal in their Jewish beliefs. That's the point of them not being able to attend the footy.

They can vote any day, other than Saturday but they cannot skip Yom Kippur for the sake of a "footy game"

Unlike other religions who offer general absolution for a price or a pennance, Yom Kippur is the day which much be adhered to, footy or no footy.

Yep, I know how it works. That's exactly why my Dad - who was a cheer squad member at the time - missed the 66 premiership. That generated 46 years (so far) of regrets and recriminations.

Us Jews are currently about 0.5% of Australia. There's no way society should do much at all to accommodate the views of a fringe minority, even if it is one with disproportionate cultural sway.

(More than that, in fact I agree with joffaboy that no religion should get special treatment—why are there public holidays at Easter?—but that's a separate discussion.)
