Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
Is anyone 100% certain we would get Pick 13 for Goddard? Heard a few rumbles it may be on the twenties.

Not a huge loss its a reaming. If we where to trade BJ wwe would get Ess first pick and a player.

No we wouldn't!CURLY wrote:Not a huge loss its a reaming. If we where to trade BJ wwe would get Ess first pick and a player.
Essendon will have to use that pick on Joe Daniher!
If not for Free Agency, Essendon would not be getting BJ.

Thats what I mean the Dons would have to find us something decent. Not a shitty pick only.Life Long Saint wrote:No we wouldn't!CURLY wrote:Not a huge loss its a reaming. If we where to trade BJ wwe would get Ess first pick and a player.

Clubs get an indication of compensation prior to putting in a final offer. I suspect Pelican knows what we're getting and that has played a significant role in the decision not to push hard for Goddard to remain. Pick 13 it will be, I think.

say essendon had traded away their 2012 first rounder last year (firstly, presuming you can trade future picks)
that would put their 2012 first pick in the late twenties (i.e. their first pick is a second rounder)
say some other club bids an earlier pick than their original first rounder, would their late twenties pick be the one that they'd have to give up for the f/s selection?
this could be a strategy if you think you have a high class f/s selection coming with 12+ months notice (risky, but daniher has been known for a while)

but
if a 26 year old power forward (e.g. tex walker in a few years, to us) was lured away with a 5 year $5 million deal, wouldn't that justify a first round compensation (e.g. to adelaide)? if the AFL gives us a first rounder for goddard, do they de-value this future made-up compensation situation?
Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
You can't trade away future draft picks (except for the GWS/GC compensation picks)

Cant trade future picks. Also, the father/son bidding is done before the trade period, so it can't be manipulated in that way.

It's based on contract size and where that contract fits within the rest of the team. Meaning importance of player. One would expect it to be pick 13.

Even if you could it wouldn't be a strategy for us anyway. We're simply bereft of father/sonsSuperstar wrote:Rosco wrote: question about father / son - if anyone knows

Got this from the AFL site... It may not be 13 at all !
Should the Saints decide not to match the offer for Goddard, the compensation they receive from the AFL will be determined at the end of the free agency period, once the net effect of all movements in and out of the club during this period is known.

Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
That applies if we were to take a free agent ourselves. Pick 13 is a certainty if Goddard goes and we don't get a FA from another club. Huge contract and several top 10 B&F finishes has to land the highest compensation.howlinwolf wrote:Got this from the AFL site... It may not be 13 at all !

Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
Correct. If we recruit in a free agent, the net effect of winning him and losing BJ is what determines our compo pick. That is why we are not expected to chase any free agents. Expected to possibly trade for Caddy.howlinwolf wrote:Got this from the AFL site... It may not be 13 at all !

if we don't sign any free agents it is expected to be pick 13.

Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
Chris Pelchen on AFL radio right now, said they don't know the compensation.
Will depend on what we do in the coming weeks.
So in effect, we have no idea.

Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
It's also going to depend on whether other teams in front of us in the draft are eligible for compensation. If the formula grants Melbourne a pick for losing Maloney or Port for Chaplin, then both our picks will get pushed back.
I can't imagine BJ will get less than band 1unless they're reserving it for teams that lose multiple players.

Yeah nah pleasing positive
Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
good point on the multiple players. would they then go multiple picks? 1st and a 3rd rounder for two players worth a 2nd rounder each?vacuous space wrote:It's also going to depend on whether other teams in front of us in the draft are eligible for compensation. Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
Would think at this stage that there would be only 1 other player that would get band 1 compo the rest would be band 2 and lower. Band 2 is a compo pick at the end of first round.

Surely Goddard is in a different league to Maloney and Chaplin…Rosco wrote:good point on the multiple players. would they then go multiple picks? 1st and a 3rd rounder for two players worth a 2nd rounder each?vacuous space wrote:It's also going to depend on whether other teams in front of us in the draft are eligible for compensation. Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
Goddard and Cloke were the only two who would ever get the highest compensation. The rest will most likely be third rounders.
Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
The thing that doesn't sit we'll is the compensation in comparison to scully and ward. End of the day they all did the exact same thing.
Personally 2 first round picks seems fair, a mid and end of first round or even a first and a second round would b ok for the calibre of the player.

Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
Age is also a factor that the AFL use in their formula, so Goddard is below Scully in that regard
There is no precedent and no one knows their formula, so there is nothing to go on except a sence of what seems right..
And 13 seems right, one would think...
Chaplin would be second round, I would imagine and Molony 3rd round...
But.. it will be interesting to see..

Re: Pick 13 Are we certain to get it?
I would hope so........Seems fair to get a mid teen pick for a former #1 pick with 200 games a dual all Australian, should have been a NS medallist....at 27yo
Logical compensation
Pick #13 may not even debut
