It's Riewoldt.

A few years ago, I made a comment on here regarding Nick's marking, dismissed by the usual suspects and ignored by most. It was that people should take the opportunity to enjoy his skill, because, from what I had seen, there has never been a better marker of the football. The laws for most of his career (since modified) were the strictest in terms of the length of time a ball had to be held for a mark to be paid, no specky two touches for him. He was so good, that a number of tactics were, if not invented, then taken to a new level. Most commonly it was the strike on the arm, but also the bump just before the jump. The first has been outlawed, hence the number of frees that he gets. The second hasn't. Of course, he is now nowhere near the player that he was in the last eight years. But get a hold of a video from 2004 - 2009 and just watch him. We have been privileged. He should now be moved to CHB for the last three years of his career, otherwise there may not be another three years.

Riewoldt plays significantly differently to those other players. It's difficult to give away frees when you are on the lead and ahead of your opponent every time.

Assuming these stats are correct (and Plugger's and Modra's certainly dont look right), then the main thing they seem to show is what a clean player Riewoldt is: an incredibly low number of frees per game.

And rightly so: he is just about the cleanest player I've ever seen play the game. He always tries to outposition his opponents and he rarely initiates contact. He probably gets around half the free kicks he should get: the umps are embarassed to give him more and treat his opponents more leniently than they should.

The same thing happened to Lloyd, for different reasons. The umps eventually decided he was a stager and he needed a better case to get a free kick than most. I reckon his free kick stats would have looked better half way through his career than they did by the end. But, like Riewoldt, Lloyd was a great player unfairly maligned by fans from other clubs and even some from his own club.

Plugger was a thug. I loved him, but the way he played he was never going to win a competition for who gets the best free kick stats. Likewise Hall and Gehrig. Did these guys absolutely have to play footy that way? Riewoldt shows there is another way. But personality comes into it too: some guys feel they need to terrorize their opponents and get on top psychologically. Riewoldt largely ignores his opponents.

This sounds correct to me. Heard Dermie last night said he would love to have played in todays game with the arm chop rule.

FWIW Cam Mooney recently opined that Riewoldt was the most courageous player he had seen in an opposition who was just an out and out ball player.

His engine and mobility are he great strengths. As BM said held (stops mobility, high (defender outpaced and tryign to spoil), in the back (not so much, seems to get outpointed in a marking contest when not on a lead), and chopped arms (similiar to high).

Really it is a lame call to say he is protected more than any other player. protected by the rules as they stand, but ALL players play under those rules.

At the end of the day Riewoldt receives about one free kick per match on average (same as Franklin) -so BIG DEAL.
I'm surprised he doesn't receive more.
Obviously Franklin gives away more free kicks (as you'd expect) as he chases and tackles and throws his weight around a lot more.

Conclusion - umpires should start paying Riewoldt more free kicks as he does get infringed against a lot more often than once a match !
