AFL scrutinises coach contracts
AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has thrown his support behind a move to regulate the annual coaching merry-go-round and prevent a repeat of last September's scenario in which Geelong and Collingwood lost crucial assistants on the eve of the grand final.
Club chief executives Brian Cook and Gary Pert have led the charge to empower clubs to restrict the departure of contracted coaches, after officially protesting at a meeting of club chiefs last December.

Why "finally" I wouldn't think it was the biggest issue in the AFL.
And why is it in the Saints forum?

Because only a fool believes that Ross Lyon had no contact with Fremantle until after losing in the final.kosifantutti23 wrote:And why is it in the Saints forum?

The article is about assistant coaches leaving before the season finishes. I don't know how that would apply to Lyon.

Re: Finally- Pressure from within- Coaches contracts
more than just about Assistants
it's about the coaching arms race- $$$$ and quickly would appear to be one of the factors Ross went- Saints could not hope to match
yes we have AFL funding in 2012 which is assisting with our beefed up development area,
But given the "big " clubs are getting to 1-1 for coaching and training staff to players the gap is getting wider..

The bigger issue is the tanking thing that the AFL claim to be investigating.
Well, they are investigating priority pick system!

IMO Priority Picks system won't be changed until GWS and Gold Coast are good enough to no longer qualify for the picks. So at least a couple of years.

Actually I do agree with this. I don't think teams playing finals, should be distracted be coaching interviews and departures just because some team choose their coach poorly and sacked them. They should have to wait to after the season, draft rules are already skewed toward the lower teams.

Re: Finally- Pressure from within- Coaches contracts
We cant change players during the season, why should clubs be allowed to change coaches mid season. Clubs should not be able to seek a coach during the season. If their coach is so bad that he needs to be sacked, one of their assistant coaches should see out the remainder of the season as coach. Why should they be allowed to distract other clubs?

I think it is a bit different. There is no draft or salary cap on coaches. Cant see a problem with them going to another club. Not many if any go to another club during the year. they may get the job late in the year but then it is up to the team or the new coach to be big enough to finish the year off.
Re: Finally- Pressure from within- Coaches contracts
I agree, coaches are just employees of the club, no different to a janitor or a boot studder. They are not drafted, subject to a salary cap, tradable etc. They have a job and are paid to do it until a point where one party decides they want out, then it is up to the two of them to discuss a reasonable period of notice and an exit strategy! Not sure why they are even on contracts really? whats wrong with a weekly/monthly wage?plugger66 wrote:borderbarry wrote:We cant change players during the season, why should clubs be allowed to change coaches mid season.
