We have no key position players left what do we do!!!!!!!
We have lost a lot of talls and i feer we may be well underdone in the big body deparment. It will take us a number of years to build up the stocks again.
Why we lost so many young talls is a direct reflection on Ross lyon.I am very greatfull and think he did a great job at the club. But here is the list we have of talls we have lost now so because of him and some not.
Johnson,Cahill, lynch, walsh, gardiner, and possible Zach that is a big chunck of our young brigade.

Not sure Gardiner is that young! But understand your point.saint58 wrote:We have lost a lot of talls and i feer we may be well underdone in the big body deparment. It will take us a number of years to build up the stocks again.

And Stewie Loewe really matured with the responsibility of being the key man up forward when Plugger left.Kilda wrote:I remember when Plugger walked out on us at the end of 1994 and I thought that was the end of my short-mid term dream of seeing the Saints in a GF and yet we did it just 3 yrs later!

Stewie Loewe matured???
He was a three time all australian/best and fairest/victorian rep/ej whitten medallist whilst plugger was at StK.....
he did change position in 1995/96 to FF
but the recruiting of Heatley and drafting of Hall which really helped
It could be argued his performannce declined after that period

Saying we have NO key position players is over the top...
We have a shortage of them....we have too many at 191cm and not enough at 194+cm.
I don't know how many each list should have but what you really want is QUALITY talls on the list to cover the required positions. Hopefully they'll draft a few and the Academy will fine tune them.
The Academy might end up a quality player factory that keeps churning them out, that way Free Agency will have little affect

We definitely have a shortage of KPPs in the short to medium term. Roo and Kosi are getting on in years and I now see Kosi as a 2nd ruckmen. Not agile enough to play KPP.
Im disappointed about Tommy Walsh as are many.
I think we now really depend on Stanley and Simpkin stepping up a gear in the short term. Simpkin is listed as 91kg so is not far off being a decent size for a FB.
On a side not - Siposs was very young when we drafted him. Has he grown any taller?

We lost 4
- Walsh - a potential good player.. but will he turn into a gun forward? unsure.
- Cahill - too skinny, injury prone and bad attitude?
- Johnson - not big enough to be key position, or good enough?
- Lynch - slow.. not big enough, doesn't have presence.. more a flanker type
We still have 4
- Stanley (forward) - tall, fast. need to build body strength and football smart
- Simpkin (back) - slight under sized full back, skilled, good at rebounding.
- Ferguson (back) - tall, fast and atheletic CHB
- Archer (forward) - big monster forward.. aggressive.. and has presence.
As you see, all we did was to let go of the less likely types.. (Ok, Walsh was a tough one) we should be able to pick up another 2-3 in the national and rookie drafts..

Stewie Loewe's performance in that grand final was so mature it was close to dead.BigMart wrote:Stewie Loewe matured???
