Can we understand....
That the simple notion of
Lets get Player X who was a great mark to come in and teach our players how to mark....
Is NOT how it works....
Coaching is about ability to communicate a set of instructions or routines to someone....provide types of drills that practice and reinforce this learned knowledge....stay consistent with ideas
Coaching is a lot more about knowledge than ability
The key aspects of a coach that makes them a successful leader
Communication skills (talking, listening, body language) honesty and integrity, professionalism..
Otherwise Gary Ablett would be a great coach
Some great players end up great coaches (matthew, Blight) as they have a combination of both....
But generally successful coaches have not been blessed with natural ability and have had to work and train for their success...often defenders who have to be strategic about their development and game style...players with natural ability sometomes dont even know why they do things well...just seems second nature, no thought required
Pagan, Jeans, Parkin, Sheedy, Malthhouse, Clarkson, Thompson, Hafey, Joyce
Make up a lot of the successful coaches of the past 30 odd years...

In the EPL the Poms call the coach a "Manager" and this is probably far more appropriate for our modern game where the coach does very little coaching. Most of that is left to the assistants.
In everyday business the Manager is responsible for overseeing operations, streamlining processes, and determining strategies. Sounds like a coach to me...

As I said....players with natural ability just have it.....its nice to have someone in your side who you can just say "you just do what you do" and put them in a position that allows them to dominate the game...beacuse they need little instruction
I heard chopper lovell say that to bj goddard when he played A game at sandy
"bj, you're on the ball....just do what you want and when you wqnt a rest, go to the goalsquare"......he got 41 possesions
Arryn oozed natural talent.....at 14 he was already a better kick than most afl players...and had no problem putting his head over it....

I thought you said Arryn was someone with question marks over him? What were they?BigMart wrote:As I said....players with natural ability just have it.....its nice to have someone in your side who you can just say "you just do what you do" and put them in a position that allows them to dominate the game...beacuse they need little instruction

It is far more unusual for successful players to also be successful coaches, than vice-versa.
You are correct when you say that many successful players with high levels of natural ability do not understand why they are successful.
Your post also illustrates why Grant Thomas said that the right person with certain attributes could be a successful AFL coach ... regardless of whether they had played football or not ...
IMO it's communication + being able to convert ideas into something practical that are the biggest requirements for a coach ...

No doubt this is in response to the idiot who suggested we get in Barry Hall or Cameron Mooney as a forward coach.

That's why you have a screening process to check out the person, not just grab a star and hope he makes a good coach. It is also risky picking a previously successful coach, as the whole success thing is about the right mix of people at a given time, and this may not happen when the coach moves clubs. The huge thing is smart recruiting and smart player development- something Geelong woke up to.. dont just pick skills, pick the person as well.

This is true. Some people are good teachers and some people become good teachers because they had to think about things.
some p[layers just "play" on instinct and cant really express or pass that knowledge on.
That is why i get annoyed by that saying "those that cant teach".
this is nonsense of course. some people are just good teachers.
and some people who "can" cant teach for nuts.

I do quite a bit of cricket coaching, and it reminds me of a story another coach told me about Viv Richards. This bloke played with him at Somerset, so had seen at first hand how good he was.
In the session with these developing players, Viv just could not put into words any techniques, or simply demonstrate how to do these things.
Just stuff like...'see the ball...bang'....'wait for the right one....biff'. Quite funny really. He couldn't explain his instincts, which was how he played. He was a genius of course, but hadn't ever had to really think about it.

So you are of the belief barry and cam are bad communiactors??
Are you friends with them too???
Because i believe that i did say...their communication style is exactly what is required
Did i say they should be approached because they were great players.....or because they were strategically important power fwds who led fwd lines with success???
I believe i outlined 4 points as to why they could assist with the non-structured fwd line.....
I also did not realise moomey was a star.....i would suggeat a GOP....but played his role well...
Hall.....his leqdership qualities are obvious.....blind freddy could see that... Players walked taller around him.....not dssimi
Ar to Brown, Hamill....
Anyways....good try plugger
Bring up some old chestnuts now.....maybe from your list...
