St Kilda moves to keep Lyon

Lyon, who moved to Kelly's Elite Sports Properties stable last week, is believed to have indicated a desire for the club's executive and board to approve a long-term list strategy before embarking on contract talks."
...and that right there, is why I rate him so highly.

Good to hear.
Sign him up for 5 years but on the proviso that the list strategy is signed off by both Nettlefold and Pelchen/Lyon.
I hope if there is the full rebuild, a slightly more offensive approach is taken, which is against Lyon's natural instinct, but necessary IMO to maintain our membership numbers. Pelchen could help with this gradual transition.
Pointless signing up Lyon for only 3 years IMO. Make it long term as it could take 5 years to see any real effect if it's a big rebuild.

This is fantastic news. For once we have an administration with some experience in management. One of the best coaches going around. Westy and the board are doing a great job and with RL as coach I think the future looks bright. I say get the deal done and give him a 3 year deal after 2012.
Having said that I think 2012 will be our shake down year. I don't think the dust has settled on a few issues yet and as such I think 2012 will really tell us where the team is at and which players have a future.

the Soothsayer Westaway predicted this ..........Cairnsman wrote:Westy and the board are doing a great job and with RL as coach I think the future looks bright. I say get the deal done and give him a 3 year deal after 2012.
an extra 2 would make it 8 years - if it's 3-4 he makes the 10 Greg suggested.

A coaches contract is not worth the paper they are written on.
Like any coach Lyon could be sacked at amy time.
One thing it will do is stop speculation next season, and if we have a two or three year rebuild after 2012, stop the wolves calling for his sacking.
He has earned credits for his efforts so far. Almost two flags is a fair return.
We need the stability and we all need to keep our nerve. We will come good again and it will be in the short not long term.

Lance or James??

Really great news The extension is a good fit for both parties. The Club needs his integrity, his coaching smarts, his people skills and his all round professionalism.
The Club is not dead by a long way, so for Lyon, it's an opportunity and a challenge to rebuild the team for another shot at the flag - not a small hill to climb, I must say. Ross has his coaching roots with us and longevity of his contract will give him the time to plan appropriately for the longer term, without the "we want a flag now" pressure hanging over his tenure.

As much as I really like Ross the Boss he is slightly over-rated on this forum probably due to our history of some really shithouse coaches.
Ross inherited a list/core group of players that were always going to be in the top 4 teams for a good few years. Now is his major challenge of finding a few more players to add to the core to give us a real shot again at the flag that we have come so close to.

Am I alone in thinking that it would be in Ross' and the club's best interests if articles like this stayed out of the media spotlight until the deal is done and we can make a big deal out of the announcement? !!
NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Obviously overrated by the Coaches' Association too then, with Woosha and Malthouse the only other Coach of the Year winners still incumbent. Of course they're not overrated because they have flags to their name. Lyon was involved with one as an assistant coach but naturally that counts for nothing.Zac Attack wrote:As much as I really like Ross the Boss he is slightly over-rated on this forum probably due to our history of some really shithouse coaches.

I agree Eastern, it would have been better to keep things quiet until all is settled and then make the big announcement.
However, coming as a statement from Michael Nettlefold, it's obviously a planned strategy - perhaps to keep the wolves away, so to speak.
The media will now start buzzing with speculation such as "when will it be signed," "problems in settling Lyon's contact" and other idiotic comments.
