Post: # 1024095Post SainterK »

Anyone want a go at ins and outs from our last fielded side.

Image

INTERCHANGE: A.McQualter, J.Gwilt, S.Baker, S.Dempster

So far you'd think ins would be....

Gamble Steven Armo Geary Gardiner (provided he is fit)

Outs Eddy....? ? ? ?

FB: Ray Dawson Clarke
HB: Gilbert Fisher Gwilt
C: Montagna Hayes Gram
HF: Schneider Stanley Gamble
FF: Milne Riewoldt Steven
R: Koschitzke Dal Santo Goddard
INT Jones Armitage McEvoy

SUB: Geary

Geez I reckon it will be tough for spots next year if a few kids come on...

Out is peake, blake, baker, mcqualter....and gardiner (maybe r1 but doubt by end of year...)

That one less spot on the bench makes it hard. I know ive never been a supporter of blake but he is really unlucky - just favoured clarkes form from last year. baker unlucky.

On paper the team doesnt look as good as previous years - But may be due to the fact it has four kids and a new recruite.

Pretty sure Neil will still get a game, but I agree it's good to see probably more competition for spots.

Thats closer to it for mine.

slight query on who is gonna break the lines out if middle with no Peak option though....I can see Ray/Gram etc under pressure if Steven and Smith come on.

Smith will be really interesting to watch. He looked really good in preseason, backed it up with a solid year at Sandy, but didn't get any senior games. If he has another strong preseason, he may be hard to keep out. That may spell trouble for Armo, or even Jones. I would think Gram and Ray to be reasonably safe, but RL has proven 'safe' doesn't exist at St Kilda in the past, so you could well be right.

I havent seen much of Smith but I do know Lenny needs some grunt help and Im praying Armitage can pull off a solid year in this space.

Does Smith offer much in the way of run/carry? and win his own ball?

Smith can definitely win his own ball. He's quick, but I'm not sure he's the run and carry type. He's got a decent left boot on him. I think he's more the type to get it and use it quickly. He's a fair tackler too, which, combined with his speed, is probably why he got some defensive assignments (and the infamous 'dribbler' tag).

I haven't seen him a hell of a lot either though. Probably a handful of games. The regular Sandy viewers could probably tell us more accurately whether what I'm saying is fact, or just what I've seen in limited bursts.

i think the overall structure is something like this:

first team squad (25 players)

forwards: milne, riewoldt, schneider, peake, gilbert, mcqualter, gamble
midfielders: hayes, dal santo, goddard, montagna, ray, gram, jones, polo
defenders: baker, blake, fisher, dempster, gwilt, clarke, dawson
rucks: gardiner, koschitzke, mcevoy

fringes of the first team (10 players)

defenders: gaertner, simpkin
midfielders: geary, armitage, steven, heyne, smith
forwards: lynch, walsh
rucks: stanley

rookies (12 players)

tall: cahill, johnson, archer
small: winmar, crocker, ledger, cripps, siposs
+ 4 from the rookie draft, perhaps including miles?

the most controversial choice here is polo and gamble pushing straight into the first team squad in place of eddy and king/pattison. i think that's the most likely thing to happen, as they're mature age, experienced - there's no point picking them up if you're not going to put them in the first team squad.

it seems unlikely to me that this 25 man squad as picked is sufficiently better than last year to counter our rivals' inevitable improvement - i think it's a bit better, but not decisively so.

this is where the fringe players come in. if three of the fringe players have breakout seasons and push past the bottom seven in the first team squad - peake, mcqualter, gamble, ray, polo, dempster, clarke - then we'll have the scope for dramatic improvement.

Nothing better than not having enough spots for everyone....makes everyone play better.

I hope Steven and Armitage get more than 15 games this year.

I reckon:
Out: Peake, Eddy, McQualter, McEvoy
In: Gardiner, Polo, Gamble, Steven

with Armitage, Clarke, Geary, McEvoy, Peake, Simpkin and Stanley pushing for a spot (in that order)

with Dempster, Ray, Polo and Baker on the outer. (in that order) Bakes probs get like 10 weeks suspended again.

Bergholt, you have Winmar as a small. He is 190cm. You must be thinking of the other one!

For mine, I would definitely have Jack Steven in the 25 man squad. Just not sure whether as a forward or a mid. 10 goals from 8 games this season puts him in front of most of our forwards you have selected.

B: Baker, Dawson, Blake
HB: Gram, Fisher, Gwilt
C: Schnieder, Dal Santo, Goddard
HF: Montagna, Riewoldt, Steven
F: Gamble, Gilbert, Milne
FOL: Kosi, Hayes, Jones

INT: Polo, McEvoy, Ray, Sub: Clarke
EMG: Stanley, Peake , Geary

OTHERS: Armitage (Can’t find him a spot unless injury), A.Smith, Dempster, Simpkin, McQualter

You would think that Polo would go straight into the team, they would not have picked him up otherwise.
With Gardiner to Retire
If Baker retires, Geary to Take his spot

OUT: Eddy, McQualter, Peake, Dempster
IN: Gamble, Steven, Polo, Clarke

Thanks for that, gonna cut and paste from yours now you've done the hard bit....hopefully I have included everyone :)

B: Dempster, Dawson, Blake
HB: Gram, Fisher, Gwilt
C: Schnieder, Dal Santo, Goddard
HF: Montagna, Riewoldt, Steven
F: Gamble, Gilbert, Milne
FOL: Kosi, Hayes, Jones

INT: Armo, Gardiner, Ray Sub: Geary
EMG: Stanley, Peake, McEvoy

OUT: Eddy, McQualter, Peake, McEvoy
IN: Gamble, Gardi, Steven, Armo, Geary

Armo gets first crack at the inside mid spot before Polo, but will have (what I believe to be) the benefit of him breathing down his neck in 2011.

Dempster has played his best footy when Baker is out of the side (even in 2008) so I'd like to see what he can do given first crack at this role following his very good peformance in the finals.

I'd like to see Clarke blossom in 2011, and would give him a run at Sandy to build up his fitness and confidence before selecting him for the best 22.

i think McEvoy has to play the whole year .... basically after 2011 Gardi will definatly be gone ...
also reckon Mini , Geary and Bakes will have to fight for their spots in the team with baker winding down i reckon he will get some longer stints out of the side for reasons other then suspention

Why would you think Raph would not be ready to go by round one? With a full preseason and NAB Cup behind him, he will be an automatic selection, way ahead of Dempster.

If he is ready come round one then that is good, and he would likely be in the best 22.

No need to be overly sensitive

I just thought that given his history, it would be good to build up his body to coping with footy week in week out....I am certainly not saying he isn't in our best.

(BTW I don't see Raph playing a Dempster/Baker role myself, if that went to anyone else it would be Geary wouldn't it?)
