Brighton's Best

Post: # 860427Post Elvis »

Okay, to make this team you had to come directly from a Brighton based club. The list shows what a fantastic nursery that part of Melbourne has been and perhaps demonstrates that this area is true Saints heartland.

As with other line ups feedback most welcome and I will finalize the line up after a few weeks in case I have missed anyone.

Check out the ruck stocks here, Big Carl, then Pup Sarau, then the RSPCA's friend Douggie Booth!

All clubs were/are in and around the Brighton area... and had to have the Brighton tag in their name. A few of these clubs have fallen over but The Vampires are still going around and immensely proud of their contribution to the St.Kilda ranks.

The line up doesn't have a coach yet... anyone coached the Saints from Brighton? If we can't dig one out then we'll settle for one of the line up that has gone on to a credentialled coaching career.

Enjoy!

Nice work Kosi. It is starting to look like a great line up with these additions.

I had a more old fashioned approach to putting this one together and casually thumbed my way through a number of different books. Some people like golf, others reading, other scoring cricket.. I like doing it that way but this is a great search tip!

There are a few amongst that lot that will make this side no doubt. I'll do some background check their credentials and then run with these.

Again, side has been chosen to honour players in their (or closest to) their original positions. Hopefully this mix will give it a centreman, Geoff Fidler being out of position here. He did get a couple of runs on the ball but by my recollection was thrown around a little and nestled in down back a lot more successfully.

Will update throughout the week. Hopefully we can get a few Brightonians to give us some background on these, especially some of the pre-50's players. What already strikes me is the number of players that had less than five starts. Perhaps an indication that the Brighton area was indeed a most favoured nursery.

thanks again and enjoy

Great post!!
Sets me off down memory lane.
Have just realised how many great players who did not reach 100 games. For example, Pat hartnett (66) and Clarrie Hindson (90) whom I saw play and who were stars every week. Others like Ditterich, Sarau stand out like beacons by todays standards in terms of total games.

Checked these last night and will fully reference them this afternoon at some stage. While most indeed were connected to Brighton clubs, many actually went there after their days at St.Kilda, without having come from Brighton in the first place, so they won't make the line up. I'll point these out as I reference. There are a few gems though, enough to strengthen the line up and even one that went on to coach Brighton to a flag.

Maybe a trivia question for those interested until I get time to update here.

Thanks again for the search tip Kosi, it prompted some very handy, fascinating and nostalgic reading.

I have a sneaking suspicion he might be a poster here too!

I'll check it out and if so would be a fine addition in the manner of an honourable mention, or Official Brighton/Saints patron!

Elvis you have done a great job but my great grandfather was Harry(Horace) Hattam I'm pretty sure according to my family he went to Brighton after he came back from the war.
He played half back and even back in those days they had the young girls chasing them .
My grandmother donated the 1913 grand final photo to the club they all lived in Brighton.

Awesome but he played for Brighton after being with the Saints and unfortunately doesn't quite fit the criteria for this line up. It is a shame that there has to be some sort of criteria, but if it was extended to those that might have played at a Brighton club after they left the Saints I would very much run the risk of missing lots of players out, simply because they are difficult to keep track of after they leave the club. Came from Oakleigh originally, according to Russ Holmesby. Happy to let Russ know if that is incorrect, but the man is pretty sharp on this sort of stuff!! Horace Hattam still slips in as an apology/honorable mention.

Another reason there is a criteria is to pay tribute to clubs/areas/states where players were nurtured. In that way, if my sources are correct and he did come from Oakleigh it would be kind of disrespectful to that club to represent him as having hailed from Brighton immediately prior to going to play for the Saints.

I am halfway through a Saints that Served team, but thought I'd leave it until around Anzac week next year... a team in which your Great Grandfather will be afforded his rightful place. Fantastic to have that sort of lineage in your bloodlines and thanks for the background!

A bit late with this, but how about Alan Stretton, Major-General AO, OBE.
He, like Col Williamson went to Brighton from St Kilda and under Col (the Coach) helped Brighton win its first flag. Played 31 games with St Kilda and kicked 10 goals.
He lived in the district and started training with Melbourne until the Coulter Law Tribunal decided he was bound to St Kilda.
His decorations resulted from his miltary service and his work in the Darwin tragedy, Cyclone Tracy, 1974.
Strangely he seems to have slipped under Holmsbey's radar.

No doubting the good General's family connection to Brighton and most certainly he was a valuable contributor to that line up beyond his days at the Saints. Yet sources so far suggest he came directly from Scotch College via Melbourne, so he makes the also list at the moment.

An interesting aside in this line up is the number of players who went on to have quite extraordinary lives. A little on the geeky side but definitely very enjoyable sourcing this info, with contributions like yours assisting the validity of the side chosen.

Thanks Duggie, it is still a formidable line up, even without the Major General's firepower!

I was going to post about Alan Stretton yesterday but had a minor (according to my son) computer malfunction although a major problem for me. I can't recall where, but I have a film clip of Brighton's VFA flag win and in the 3/4 time huddle Stretton was clearly visible. When you look at the size of other players around Stretton he looks like either a ruckman or a KPP.

Again Stretton played at Brighton after being at St.Kilda, so doesn't quite fit the criteria, as explained above. Nevertheless this and other posts demonstrate the strong connection between the red, white and black and the area, a genuine nursery.

I guess all this does beg the question.... Is there a single team in the country where a whole team could be made up of ex-St.Kilda players. Probably not, but there might be several leagues out (possibly the amateurs, definitely Ballarat) there where ex-Saints have gone on to play football..enough to make a decent side.

Two 66'ers (two and a half if we count Big Carl in the stands), an OBE Major General, an Australian Test cricketer and WW2 fighter pilot, a Colonel... indeed a talented and colourful line up.

Fantastic piece of research Elvis !!!!

Not only a great read and some great memories, but a interesting footnote on our history.
I reckon your summary should be a link to WestofMoorabbin so it is not "lost" in the mire of abusive threads about egos.

Will do and thanks for the thumbs up Enrico. Have been holidaying at Point Lookout so fell behind with this. Will consider the Brighton line up as closed and thanks to all contributors again. It is a cracking side.

During the break I read a biography of Keith Miller...what an incredible story, if this has in some tiny way helped to promote the historical integrity of our list then I feel very chuffed about that.

The latest team, however, has a slightly different tack! Check out the next post.
