Current players that will one day coach
Will be interesting to bump this thread in a few years.
In light of Hardwick and Scott's recent appointments, it seems as though clubs are looking for players who were equipped with both footy-smarts and hardness in their playing days.
Keep in mind that success as a player doesn't necessarily translate to coaching aspirations. Often those who weren't successful footballers decide to coach as a way of fulfilling that burning desire they had to achieve something in the game. However, those players are almost impossible to pick.
I'd be surprised if the following footballers didn't pursue coaching once their playing days were over. (those with asterisks will IMO definitely coach)
From St Kilda:
Luke Ball
Other clubs:
Simon Goodwin
Luke Power
Tarkyn Lockyer *
Mark McVeigh
Matthew Pavlich *
Paul Chapman *
Sam Mitchell *
Josh Carr
Chad Cornes *
Jude Bolton

Farkin Tarkyn as my brother calls him.OLB wrote:Tarkyn Lockyer *
Hope he coaches Collingwood. He can teach them how to shirk it, hang back for cheap possessions , and generally whinge and moan.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Like Matthew Knights?Thinline wrote:Farkin Tarkyn as my brother calls him.OLB wrote:Tarkyn Lockyer *

It's strange how perceptions can differ.
I see him as a very clever footballer who's definitely not one to shy away from the hard stuff. Also impresses me whenever he does media.

Just like Knights, yes!
Re Farkin Tarkyn - Must confess I fail to see any attractive feature about Black and White folk, but he along with that turnip Nick Maxwell really rub me up the wrong way. All prim and articulate and schooled and oh-so-earnest in front of the cameras but on the field they bleat like a couple of flockless sheep. It GRATES!!!!!!!!!!! Those two are two of my least favourite football people EVER behind Brett Heady, that muppet Glen Jackovich, Sam Mitchell, Matthew Lloyd, Brian Lake and - believe it or not - Brad 'Smiling Assassin' Johnson. Re the latter, go figure. I can't explain it myself.
Ah F*** it, I'm not huge on anyone who ain't a Saint.

Can't stand Johnson either. And Lake is an overrated hack (as shown by Riewoldt a few weeks ago).

He's just got that about him doesn't he? Astute, tough, yet refined. Just an impressive human being. Who wouldn't want to play for him if he coached?aussierules0k wrote:OLB... as I clicked on the link.. the first and only Sainter that came to mind was L Ball. Dunno why.
Re Sam Mitchell, he does seem a little jumped-up. He had some work done to his teeth not too long ago but it's as if they're now too big for his mouth. That's the impression I get when he speaks - like his teeth are in the way.Thinline wrote:Just like Knights, yes!

Interesting Thread....
We all know Simpson will be coaching soon enough..but another from the roos could be Petrie...Seems to have a very good football brain and understands the game as well as any imo.
I think he will be involved in some form of coaching. whether that be as a head coach or a line coach(Fwd) i dont know.

Liam Jurrah
I saw him signal to an oppostion player to mark it once instead of punch as no one was near him. Great teacher of the game
On a serious not
Brett Kirk
Tyson Edwards/scott Thompson
Leigh Montagna
However you might have to think outside the square, who would have ever though that Ross Lyon/ Grant Thomas would coach?
So i reckon Lewis Roberts Thomspson
