Our nine rookies for 2009
Just to clarify our rookies are:
Luke Miles - medium sized backman, used to playing on bigger opponents
Khan Haretaku - medium sized KKP forward/ruck
Zac Dawson - Depth KKP backman
Tom Simpkin - 190cm medium sized back
Brad Howard - Fast midfielder being groomed as a running back/option for small fast forwards
Steven Gaertner - Big bodied midfielder being groomed to play on fast leading forwards
Ross Tungutulum - Small crumbing fast forward with a bit of x -factor about him
Sam McGarry - Gut running midfielder
Blake McGrath - 200cm+ ruckman
Is that right? 9 of them ?
Big emphasise of backman there I notice. Especially those that can run a bit.
Good to have another rookie ruck in the works and am glad we've got a new small forward there too

Yep, you've got it bang on the money there skeptic!
Thought personally that Dawson would still have been around with in the 3rd or 4th round, and the re-drafting of Howard wasn't the best idea, but the fresh faces look fairly promising. Hopefully a couple of this lot can develop into regular AFL players - my highest hopes are for McGrath, Miles, Choo CHoo and McGarry!

Some big boys on that rookie list, I guess they're hoping to unearth the next Cox/ Sandilands...
Also interesting to see one of our new boys already have their number.... Blake McGrath, Number 99!!!

I'd expect that no matter how badly he does in '09 he has earnt himself a lower number for '10

It will be a while IMO.. it took weeks and weeks last year IIRC.... I would expect that 35 will be staying put, put on hold to see how Steven handles the big league...

If my arthriitis doesn't play up I can get close to but not quite 3 minutes for 20m.

like the look of Simpkin, good pace, hands, size and kick.Jimmy1972 wrote:Some vids to see
Tom Simpkin
Steven Gaertner
Sam McGarry
saw Gaertner in the U18 final (VM vs WA) and he really didn't impress, looked pretty lost on the field. That said he does some good things in one of those vids.
Good luck to em all, hope they can develop at the Saints.
'Parson and the assuring figures of Peter MacFarlane, Cameron Ilett, Daniel Flesfadar and Jamie Hackett dictated play with aplomb while the darting presence of Ross Tungatalum, James Puautjimi and Nicholas Daniels-Heenan added an air of fancy to the spectacle.'
'No moment was more special than Tungatalum's dashing foray in the final term to nail his fourth major of the contest and lodge a compelling nomination for goal of the season.' - NT News 29/11/2008
'24 players were involved in a TAC Cup invitation match against the Western Jets who are currently in the top 4 in the Under 18 TAC Cup. The Tattersalls Territory Thunder were defeated by 34 points after trailing by only 9 at ¾ time. Wanderer’s Steven Motlop kicked three goals while St Mary’s Ross Tungatalum and Alice Springs West’s Scott Taylor were among the best players on the day.' - NT AFL 18/4/2008
'Luke Stapleton as usual was amonst Saint's best along with Carl Peterson and the brilliant Ross Tungatalum.' - ABC Darwin (NTFL Grand Final) 17/3/2008
'The Saints overcame a 16 point half time deficit to defeat the Magpies by 35 points with regular half back, James Pautjimi (4 goals) & goal sneak Samson Mungatopi (3 goals) finishing off the good work by a resurgent Saints backline in the second half. James Imbi was dominant for the Magpies early but was well held by Daniel Flesfadar later in the game. Donald Mungatopi helped set up the Magpies lead in the first half with 4 goals but he was quietened in the second half by first gamer, Ross Tungatalum.' - Footy Goss 5/11/2007
He has gotten some good raps.

Yeah I'm sad to see Rix go, he was never going to make it in the AFL but he really seems to be a quality bloke, and from some of his articles on SaintsCentral he's got a good head on his shoulders too...
