saints pitch for cousins
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/ ... 88,00.html
ST KILDA has emerged as Collingwood's chief rival in the race to secure Ben Cousins.
Provided Cousins receives a clearance from the league to resume his AFL career - the issue will be discussed by commissioners on Monday - the Saints will pitch hard to have the 2005 Brownlow medallist join them next year.
Cousins has discussed with St Kilda the possibility of joining the Saints via the national or pre-season draft.
The Brisbane Lions are also considering the Cousins situation.
It is believed his preference remains the Magpies, who have closely monitored his progress this year as he battles drug addiction.

Is there is any reason at all we would want to give him a 3 year contract. One year at a time will do.Con Gorozidis wrote:lets get him in the pre-season draft. sign him up boys. dont let the pies get him. good replacement for harves. give him a 3 year contract (with restrictions for any re-offending obviously)

I agree. It'd give him something to think about during the seasonplugger66 wrote: One year at a time will do.
He certainly deserves another chance to rectify his career. Leaving him out of the game would be incredibly detrimental to his health and overall direction in life. I hope the club pushes hard for him!
When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!
12 months on and many saints fans are finally talking about getting him.
I am one that has ALWAYS said he needs to be playing footy, what the AFL have done to this bloke is nothing short of a disgrace. (the way its been dealt with)
Get him back in the game and get the drug policy up to speed (pardon the pun) and lets just all move on.
Just hope the deal is done as expected, he will be playing in 09 and I reckon we have a very good shot at getting him.
#9 is waiting for you BC, big Frase would be more than happy to hand it over
Hurry up dimwit and get your shyte together you are a joke.

I don't agree I think the AFL needed to take a stand with this. His behaviour was not what you would expect from a professional and he did admit to taking drugs.
However that is in the past, I always said I would never want him in a Saints jumper but I have to say I would be happy to see him come back as a saint. I beleive he deserves a chance to play and I beleive the footy public deserve to see him play a gain too.
Can't wait to see how West Coast react at next years game if we get him.

Cousins is a disgrace.
StKilda should avoid him like the plague.
For a start ...
He is too old.
He hasn't played for two seasons.
But more significantly the man is irreversibly flawed ...
He is a drug addict.
He has mental issues.
He has behaviour issues.
He has links to criminals.
He has a long history of making poor judgements.
Why would we want him ?
Imagine the poor role model he would be to our younger players.
Let him go to Collingwood where he will drag down their scumbag culture even deeper into the slime.
SAY NO TO COUSINS !!

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Id be happy to have him on the HUGE proviso that his is 100% clean and willing to work his tail off for us.
His contract would probably have to be year by year, more so because his age than his past.
All in all if he can cross teh T's and dot the I's I dont have a problem with him being a Saint in 09

Yep getting 30 + touches a game wont teach them a thingEnrico_Misso wrote:Cousins is a disgrace.

And before you carry on about his lifestyle, the young blokes are already exposed to drugs (get your head out of the sand) and its a decision thing so his past addictions would not mean anything to them, they would see it every weekend already, geez he could even teach them about where he went wrong.
I cant wait to see him in a Saints jumper in 09.
GET IT DONE ST KILDA

My concerns, are not related to his "other" history
He has played only a handful of games over a long period of time?
Not sure how his legs are holding up?
Worried our supporters are expecting BC to burst out of the pack like the old days?
I hope that people are realistic in their expectations, and expect him to be at about 75-80% of his former glory.

yes because one champion with 3 years left in him plus is going to turn out list from one that is playing for the now and only now to one that is planning for the future....SENsaintsational wrote:Glad to see we still have our eyes on building for the future.JeffDunne wrote:Listening to Burkie on SEN it's pretty clear we're making a big play for him.
Sounded pretty confident too.

The guy has admitted he's totally obsessive (hence his problem)... he will be one of the fittest guys there from day one I reckon.borderbarry wrote:I would expect that whereever Ben goes, he will start the season off slowly, but get better as he gains match fitness throughout the year.. Should be in good form by finals time.
King, Gardiner, M Clarke and now Cousins....showing a trend.Saints Premiers 2008 wrote:yes because one champion with 3 years left in him plus is going to turn out list from one that is playing for the now and only now to one that is planning for the future....SENsaintsational wrote:Glad to see we still have our eyes on building for the future.JeffDunne wrote:Listening to Burkie on SEN it's pretty clear we're making a big play for him.

And with a high profile 30 yo player with a recent history of both not playing and regular hamstring injuries....you'd think we could look elsewhere.
Nothing to do with his off field misdeamours....all to do with the mindset of the club.
"Let's think of the here and now and the future will look after itself."
If he can't play for 5 years for or 100 games, he shouldn't be recruited.
