Our Culture.. something to be proud of
After reading all the smoke and mirrors coming from The Pies over the Heath Shaw/ Allan Didak controversy I can't help but feel proud of our Club role models.
Harves.. 21 years and not a SINGLE bit of controversy. He exudes pride and dignity in himself, his club and his family.
Luke Ball.. Courageous application to a task and an inspiring role model.
Lenny Hayes .. ditto
Nick Reiwoldt .. takes less then par personal and club performance very hard.
Brendon Goddard .. ditto Nick
This is what makes me proud to be a Sainter. Not 16 flags or whatever the Pies have.
Flags at all costs seem to be the go for some Clubs. Read Carlton as well.
These guys can't win a flag on their own but by hell they can hold their heads up high.
We've had our dark days with culture but our Club is in good shape now.

We're not all clean over here but atm we are probably the best behaved team, both on and off the field, it is good to have such good members of society represent the club... Having said that though we could have the same thing happen to us next week and we will look like idiots...

i cant understand why these guys who are in a dream job getting payed big time $$$ flirt with danger and risk their carreer ... i mean maybe its just me but if i was an AFL footballer and i knew the media would scruitenise every slip up i had i would limit my alcohol consumption to 2 beers and make sure i was at home in bed by 1030pm each night i mean with the exception of Harvey most players have a 8-10 year window to earn as much money play as many games and win as many flags as they can surely you would be able to put you party life on hold for that time to secure your future ??

Some people don't won't/don't change - regardless of their status in society.

Lots of money + 21 years old + (generally) no brains = exactly what you've mentioned. Some of these guys haven't got the smarts to realise that they're set up for life if they can just apply some self-control.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:i cant understand why these guys who are in a dream job getting payed big time $$$ flirt with danger and risk their carreer ... i mean maybe its just me but if i was an AFL footballer and i knew the media would scruitenise every slip up i had i would limit my alcohol consumption to 2 beers and make sure i was at home in bed by 1030pm each night i mean with the exception of Harvey most players have a 8-10 year window to earn as much money play as many games and win as many flags as they can surely you would be able to put you party life on hold for that time to secure your future ??

Very hard to stay at home and watch a dvd if you knew you could walk into a bar and have girls all over you, and generally be treated like a superstar... especially at that age.degruch wrote:Lots of money + 21 years old + (generally) no brains = exactly what you've mentioned. Most of these 'young afl superstars' are just dumb.
They are picked up in the draft as 18 year olds with very little experience or sophistication and are expected by thier Clubs to act maturely.
They are fawned upon, idolized, given anything and everything they could ask for and some things they could never even imagine.
They are paid more money as 21 year olds than their family has probably ever seen in a decade.
They have sycophantic fans telling them they are superstars and because of their lack of experience, maturity and sphistication, they think they are indestructable.
That's why I have less of an issue with the Heath Shaw's of this world who appears to have 'stuffed up' big for the first time.
As for Didak - he is a different matter.
How many times can you keep making the same mistakes. It's not like he hasn't been warned before that the behaviour he has undertaken is not acceptable. I wonder if Heath Shaw would have gotten into trouble if he was just drinking with his brother (without the company of Didak)?
I see Didak as the next Ben Cousins. Maybe if WCE had had the balls to pull him in to line at the age of 25 he wouldn't have turned into what he has. Then agian some people just won't listen to advice.

Let's face it, AFL players have had very little exposure to a real job with real problems that real people have to deal with.
They are a product of the system, they are conditioned to be aggressive, risk taking adrenalin junkies so it's no surprise they can't switch that off.
Reminds me of towns in the UK like Aldershot which have massive army bases near them. Saturday night is a no go zone cause of all the fighting. Soldiers not being able to turn off from being killing machines. Same thing.
