Many H&A games from yester year
Footscray v St Kilda 1978 Western Oval. Templeton kicked a bag (15 I think).
Collingwood v St Kilda 1990 Victoria Park - 10 goals down at 1/2 time.
St Kilda v Hawthorn 1999 Waverley. That was the game that told us that Tim Watson could not coach. 11 goals up 1/2 way through the second quarter. The Hawks kicked 10 goals straight in the third. No moves came from the box. Nice one, Tim.
But the winner is clearly...

I'm pretty sure that was '91 at princes park (correct me if im wrong - which is often)
My games would be
* 06 elimination final against the dees
* 97 GF (obviously)
And in more recent times.
* Last years draw against the dosg which vertialy eanded our season. Felt bloody empty after that game. Like you SP 2008 i was almost in tears.

Yep was in '92.
The only time we played the blues at Waverly in '91 we beat them....badly from memory.

97 was shattering.
I normally remember big games reasonably well.
But I have absolutely no memories of that last quarter at all.
Just went into an agonising trance.
But 71 was just as bad if not worse.
22 points up at 3/4 time.
Almost over the line.
Hard to describe the feeling as they pegged us back and beat us.
It was a bit like having your blood drained out.
Felt almost dead at the finish.
The two worst days of my life.

The game where the Dockers won after the siren hurt a bit. Lucky I was at the other end.
They bloody used that game in their promos the next year as well so there was a constant reminder of it.
Yeah they showed at as part of the 150 years in football package at the game last saturday.
was bloody spewin that night .... the only time freo do anything it's against us

The loss in 71 was the first loss that cut me to the bone...remember it like lt was yesterday...think it was 18 points at 3 quarter time before Keddie came on an changed the course of history in 15 minutes...never did another thing but his role in histiry is unchangable...
The team that year including the likes of Cowboy,Carl .Barry Lawrence ,Rossy Smith,Travis Payze,Brian Mynott, ect were worthy warriors but fate was not favourable...
Cried l my eyes out as a 14 year old and believe the club has never really recovered from the missed opportunities of that era...
97 was the straw that broke the camels back...like Geelong supporters last year I hoped for salvation and for the weight of 71 and the pain in between to be released and lifted from our collective shoulders...
After the 05 loss in Adalaide and 06 against Sydney I realised that the suffering had only begun....
Still hold on to the chance that the ultimate will still come in my lifetime but ...
if not in 08-10..
then I must admit the hope will fade...
Holding on by the skin of my teeth

2005 Preliminary Final vs Sydney - for us to be blown apart in the final term was extremely painful to watch
2007 Round 8 vs Hawthorn - An absolute borefest, negative footy at its worst

5 prelims in 7 years. 40 wins from 49 games.
2009 and 2010 were 2 of the 5 best years ever by the St.Kilda FC.
Thanks for all your efforts Saints.

Agree with all those finals losses mentioned. Especially '71 and '97.
In an obvious, different way, though, the worst I ever saw was in 1978 (?) v Collingwood at Victoria Park. We lost by something like 31 goals to 3. The worst thing was that I arrived late by train 10 minutes into the first quarter, and we'd already kicked our first two goals.
But, strangely, I've enjoyed other games even less.

Where there's hope, there's fear.
Hmmm couple of years ago, when we played the Kangas at Manuka. Blight coaching I believe. Great to see Stewie Loewe out on the park before he retired, but horrible game.

Any finals loss burns for a long time.
The close ones don't make it any better - in some respects they are worse.
As for H&A games, a shocking match against Fitzroy at Waverley in the 90's sticks in my mind. Can't even remember the year, but it was bitterly cold, the football was sh!thouse and the crowd must have been less than 10K.
The opening at the GABBA a couple of years ago was pretty bad.
The game last year against Hawthorn. Actually there's been a few like that in the past 18 months.
The worst days though would have been in the 80s and being on the end of some terrible hidings. There's a couple of games I could re-live but the memories are too painful.

Agreed, SP. I too was 14 and was similarly devastated. Happy as a clam at 3/4 time, surrounded by Hawthorn supporters who were deeply depressed and then it all went wrong.
And for those who never got to see them, the '71 team was absolutely fantastic. Skillful, tough, fast (Stuart Trott, a copper, was the fastest player in Australia at that time). Breen kicked four that day and was magnificent.
The only thing about that defeat is that while it was the most upsetting I'd seen up until that point, it wasn't, truth be told, the "worst" game. The standard was incredibly high and it had drama from beginning to end.
Have to stop; it is getting me upset all over again.

Stkilda vs Essendon.
Lost by 99 points. 100% shithouse.
And in 1971, we were 20 points up at three quarter time, with a late goal to Leon Rice (Hawthorn) who was on the boundary thirty metres out on his wrong foot and just after Barry Breen had hit the post. But my memories are only hazy!
