IF the coach is Dean Bailey, IF....

Former Essendon nuggety midfielder of the 80s and 90s. Think he finished his career at Geelong.

From The Age website, just updated.

Demons to agree on new coach
August 30, 2007 - 10:34PM

The board of AFL club Melbourne has met to agree on the Demons' next fulltime coach, who will be announced early next week.

The club's coaching selection panel has reportedly identified Melbourne's next coach, and Neale Daniher's fulltime successor is expected to come from one of outgoing Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, Port Adelaide assistant coach Dean Bailey or Hawthorn assistant coach Damien Hardwick.

Caretaker coach Mark Riley, who will oversee the Demons in Sunday's game against Carlton, and former Fremantle coach Chris Connolly have reportedly been overlooked.

Melbourne chairman Paul Gardner and chief executive Steve Harris could not be contacted but a Melbourne spokesman confirmed the board would review the selection panel's findings.

He said Melbourne still had to discuss contract details with the new coach.

Melbourne are expected to name the new coach on either Monday or Tuesday.

While I have no idea if you are right or wrong Bot......

But there have been so many inside sources and definite choices for the job announced over the last few weeks, I think as a Melbourne member and supporter I will just wait patiently until the club decides to tell those of us it effects who will be our guy for the next few years.

Besides I actually find it disappointing that a board member would walk out of a meeting as important as that and open his (her) mouth immediately.

No reflection on you of course but as a member that would be disappointing.

I went to school with Dean Bailey and also played cricket with him in my junior years. Was a very fine cricketer back then. He's a top bloke and I think he will do well. Smart thinker.

Interesting selection I reckon. The battling back line players have been very successful coaches over the last 30 years. ex: Hafey, Jeans, Parkin, Malthouse, Sheedy. Maybe its a coincidence, maybe the average player (turned coach) relates better to the average footballer. Was well known that Ian Chappel was a better leader than greg Chappel due to the above thought pattern.

Steven Quartermain and Kelli Underwood were discussing this on Channel 10 news last night and reckoned if the Melbourne board could keep it a secret for that long in football circles they would be doing very well!! :)

So what's different about Bailey from Mark Riley?? Reckon Riley would be mightilly peeved about this!! He would have been ok about getting pipped by Sheeds or even Connolly - but Dean Bailey??

Yep Bailey it is, apologies to SaintBot for being a doubting thomas.......

The announcement (re: leak) actually came out of Port Adelaide rather than Melbourne given that Bailey will take no further part in this season for them.

Interesting times ahead. Not at all disappointed, actually I'm quite excited, in the appointment, but it is always too soon to tell.
Maybe come back to me in a year or so.

Regarding Riley he is too close the Daniher regime and while our season was completely gutted through injury and crap play he certainly wasn't any better than Daniher in match day tactics. Besides I think that the club wanted a complete change. And I think he is contracted as an assistant for another year.

As for not taking Sheedy taking him would not have been the risk that this is.

But the talk surrounding Bailey with all those he was involved in were unanimously positive and supportive.

He has had an extremely solid grounding, and Port contrary to popular belief are far from flush with money, but what they do have they use very well and they have probably an even stronger culture and identity than Essendon. Which is something that we lack and definitely need to build.

The whispers surrounding Sheedy, were very mixed, while some were downright scary. He would never have been a long term prospect, more a seat warmer for a younger coach to take over from in a few years. He isn't a Messiah, and it isn't desirable to appoint people based on unrealistic expectation and past glory........
Risky but I am grateful that the panel have been that way so for us its a case of let's see what they have to offer for the future
Fun times ahead!!!

Melbourne don't just need a coach, they need someone to be the face of the club, to rebiuild their team long term, and coach

Sheedy does all of this

Dean who...? that'll get the members and sponsors lining up to sign with melbourne

In fairness, a lot of people said "Ross who?"

Seems the unknown blokes who just go about their work quietly seem to excel in the interview/presentation process ...

Good luck to Dean Bailey (except against St Kilda).

It's all over for Kevin Sheedy though.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Sheedy to Fremantle in partnership with Harvey?

Connolly to Carlton in partnership with Ratten?

Well, Bailey wasn't at Port Adelaide training today, and when Choco was asked what was he meant to say? So he spilled the beans, not Melbourne. After Choco said that the Dees released a statement.

yeah, but we had ALOT more going for us

just look at our memebership this year compared to last, Melbourne wouldn't be able to cop that kind of a hit
