Tend to agree with this line up, particularly in a must win game.

It will be interesting to see if Mataes get dropped. If not, it might be Byrnes who gives way.

Collard might also be a chance instead of either Dow or Jones.

But I thought a contributor to this site said Jones’ papers had been marked by the Coach, who Jones had challenged?

And Dow did not do sufficient to earn a recall - noting he was generally unable to command selection at Carlton

Phillipou put himself in the right positions but the ball just did not fall his way - it happens

So I would imagine the Selectors will be reviewing game patterns and will continue to be satisfied

Hastie and Garcia similarly - both 18 year olds being given exposure at the upper level

Jones (and Campbell) was the stand out performers for Sandringham but Jones is missing something (noting he has played many fine games for St Kilda with his pace and aggression)

Lyon has said Henry will come straight back in - giving us Hill, Sinclair, Wanganeen-Milera and Wilson as line breakers

And Wood doing what he does up and back

Then there is Battle who it seems to me is being used differently over the last couple of weeks

Do we give the returns of Henry, King, Wood, Webster and Howard to put further supports around our kids - or send our kids back to the VFL?

Webster Howard Wilkie
Milera Battle Bonner

Marshall Steele Sinclair Windy
Wood Wilson

Hill Hayes Garcia
Owens King Henry

Stocker Membry Ross Pou
Sub: Byrnes

Out: Hastie
In: Henry

Dow needs to dominate a twos game first imo.
Collard every chance of replacing Pou also but I think he will be backed in.

Agree, but I’d have Hastie as sub and Brynes out.

Pou needs a break.
Haste needs game time. Too much time as a sub will limit his progress. Better playing a full game at Sandy.
Garcia has great aggression. Good enthusiasm. Needs time to develop.

Part of developing should be 3-4 games in the seniors. Back to vfl to develop. It takes time to develop. Game time plus time to breathe.

Zac is done. He is what he is. Will not improve. Does a job but ultimately will not be part of our next premiership. Will get games as kids need a break and injures mean they will need his grunt.
Experience counts. Kids need protection on the ground. Zac is perfect for that job when required. Eg if 2 of Hill Steele Crouch Sinclair aren't available.

Dow didn't look quite ready for mine.

Henry would surely come in for Garcia, who was more or less invisible on Saturday.

For mine, Phillipou stays. But I understand why some want him to be dropped.

I agree with Jones coming in as sub, but I'd drop Byrnes and keep Hastie.

That's enough changes IMO.

Sounds about right. The other one you’d expect to be considered is Collard, particularly as we are down a couple of small forwards.

It won’t be the team - we are running a dual narrative

But it really should be

Let the kids run around and get a few kicks in the VFL

Prefer Hastie to get a full game in the twos.

Speaking of rest. Those who believe Pou needs one, would sub be a better option than twos?

Don't tell me he needs to find confidence and then in the next breath he is too confident.

The confidence rubbish is just that - Rubbish

Saying your a good player, doesn’t make you a good player

Good players don’t have to tell people about it

Their actions on the field does the talking for them!

Garcia had 5 forward half tackles - the most in team
Who’s doing the small forward pressure with him out??
Henry who doesn’t play small forward ????
Can see the ball zinging out of that forward 50
Garcia has to stay for the moment
I like what Hastie brought

I’d drop Byrnes /Bonner
In Dow and Henry
Sincs can rotate HB into mid on occasion

Dow looked more ready than Henry who hasn't played since round 2.

I think it's time for a run at Sandy by two players who are basically off the pace, Pou and Owens. The return of Hayes, who has only played a small number of AFL games, showed that they need to up their efforts.
Probably Sharman is more useful and can be swung around in different roles and could be brought back in. Henry if available also

If Henry is fit, he comes in for Byrnes.

Otherwise, no change.

Would like to see Schoenmakers in for Bonner, but four first year players is too many at once.

Jones and Dow didn't do enough on Sunday to earn a game.

Pou has to be dropped if there is any integrity at selection.
He is clearly the coach's pet, but if a no impact 5 disposal game, on the back of several unimpressive games, gets rewarded with selection, it creates a real issue.

Given our history, it's a fair assumption that nobody on our current list will part of our next premiership.

What senior players bring, however, is leadership.
Jones, Hill, and Crouch bring it...Even Hannebery brought that.
It has been severly lacking since the retirement of the Grant Thomas program graduates. Once Roo handed over the captaincy to Geary, we lost leadership. It's why teams get a run on against us and we can't curtail it. It's why we go missing for parts of games. Our on-field leadership is not shared enough.

Paddy Dow will come into this team when he has the kms in his legs...It won't be about how many possessions he gets in the twos. Yes, he was in and out of the Carlton team, but this is a team that has Cripps, Cerra, and Walsh as their on-ballers. No disgrace to be 4th or 5th string to that midfield, given that he's an inside mid and wouldn't play on a wing or half back. Not surprised he looked elsewhere for opportunity. Two full games for Sandy should see him ready to come in this week.

Having said all that, I don't think we'll see Jones and Dow in the same team very often (I am sure there is a stock market joke there somewhere).

My changes for this week are:
In: Dow, Shoenmaker (earned the right)
Out: Byrnes, Phillipou (needs to find form)
Maybe Collard for Hastie, too.

Consideration to team balance is important.
Especially with Sandy I feel it is more about doing what RL wants to see than being in the best players - e.g. Shoenmaker - heaps of stats but also read needs to improve defending , which if true will be the mark to debut.

In : Henry, Dow
Out : Hastie (needs a full game), Byrnes
Sub : Poo

Throwing an idea out… would you not let the Tassie boy Arie Schoonerdeleter come in and play in his home state? Kid has been amassing 20+ disposals a week in Sandy since round 1

This is the call I think. Garcia might not be getting a heap of the ball consistently, but he is elite for tackles and if we are worried about our pressure as a side we can't be dropping out best or second best tackler. I would like to see Bonner give way because I dont think he gives us enough defensively, but I think it will be Hastie who gets dropped though I liked his effort for a first proper game.

As an aside, I dont get the obsession with bringing Schoenmaker in every week, is it just the obsession with us getting potential value very late in the draft? Not knowing all the VFL stats, with all the focus on how many disposals he is getting I get the vibe he is basically a younger Bonner, all kicking distance and not enough defensive effort. Is he getting intercept marks or spoils? Are his opponents kicking goals? Are half his disposals coming from kick outs?

From what I read… he’s more a Wilkie type. Intercept defender, lots of marks, big kicking with good skill. Question on accountability and whether he works hard enough.
Match reports are usually pretty impressive
