Re: Bonner
He completely lost his nerve after quarter time. Started ignoring team mates in space and bombing long. The pressure got to him. We knew he wasn't a physical player, but there were some timid efforts today that I think Ross Lyon will be pointing out.. it's one thing to be able to kick. It's another thing to choose the correct option.
Looks like a player whose confidence deserts him quickly.

Good at getting it. Even better at giving it away.

Re: Bonner
The modern game is all about where you manufacture the spare (or +1) and how effective they are
Last week it was NWM across hb - and we won
This week it was Bonner - and we lost
Essendon would’ve been happy for him to be the spare
As Martin was theirs

Re: Bonner
Showed why he was delisted by Port. He looked great in the pre season but I wondered how he'd stand up to the pressure in the real season. Looks like he crumbles. I'd rather stick with Hastie

Re: Bonner
The options are you back him in, or drop him.
I don't think dropping him adds value to the team or to the player.
However, I am of the belief he shoud have played VFL this week with Hastie playing. You cant play first gamers as sub.

Re: Bonner
I’ve seen this bloke play 3 games, and all I’ve learnt from them is that he is a turnover machine.
Not a great trait for a backman.
Like a worse version of Raph Clarke

Re: Bonner
Looks like HS mixed up kicks and turnovers column.
It was a horrendous performance and Lyon is going to cop a bit of flak if he drops him after what he said last week.

Re: Bonner
Obviously...AFL.com and HS journos giving Bonner votes didn't watch the whole match.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Sat 30 Mar 2024 8:30pmI stopped reading when you said HS.

And....if they did watch parts of the game, then ... coincidentally, they weren't watching when he turned it over 17 times... or every time he was in a contest or there was a loose ground ball anywhere near him
Effing imbeciles at AFL.com and HS have looked at total disposals and given Bonner a vote.
But...hey... that's not as bad as a Saints supporter giving him votes

Re: Bonner
Not one to bag players as a rule, or question their toughness, however Bonner seems to be adverse to any physical contact at this point in time.
Mason Wood and Jack Sinclair both were non physical players at a time in their careers, but now both show incredible commitment to the contest.
Something I hope Bonner can work on.
I do see him as a stop gap at the moment, a bit like the other guy from PA Leinert?

Re: Bonner
Disagree, early days in Sinclair’s career and that of Wood, whilst not suggesting they avoided contact (as Bonner is appearing to do) physical presence was not a strong point in their play, I even recall Wood mentioning that in an interview.
Both have become unflinching in their style of play which has assisted in turning Sinclair from a nice player into a genuine gun of the competition and Wood from being delisted from the wooden spooner to a regular senior player of some quality.
I admire both for turning into hard nut competitors when it perhaps did not come naturally to them.

Re: Bonner
Both Sincs and Mason Wood have suffered severe concussion during games. Both were involved in collisions were they were brave and only had eyes for the footy
You'll never see Bonner get concussion. I guarantee you that

Re: Bonner
AFL site rated Bonner at 127 AF points, highest Saint.
3 higher than Steele.
Disposal Efficiency of 66%.
Champion Data is used very flawed non-realistic data points or criteria for DE.
I think a disposal is classed as perfect if it goes straight to a team-mate, near a team-mate, or to a 50/50.
What about if it's a hospital handpass and the team-mate is surrounded?
Anyway, it's plainly obvious that Bonner might get a lot (32 touches) but he's a liability.

Re: Bonner
I have never before seen a player with over 1,000 metres gained even if they have the advantage of taking every kick in after a behind.
(He had 1,018 metres gained for those who didn't realise).
But it did seem he preferred to kick it in long to a contest around the boundary rather than pin point a closer target.

Re: Bonner
I hear Bonner was a favourite whipping boy for Port fans. 17 turnovers in one game is an egregious statistic. The team can ill afford to have repeat episodes of this. Send him down to the Magoos, until he shows signs of being able to use the ball more efficiently.
