Roughead resigns

Re: Roughead resigns
New rule: Recruiting and retention personnel are prohibited from physical contact with players. Until premiership after game celebrations.
Coaches can hug and slap wrists but no tackling. Verbal persuasion, sincerity, empathy and rhetorical violence has to be main arsenal.
If a player is particularly disliked its ok to smile when advising he/she is no longer required, but don't over egg it.

Re: Roughead resigns
So his most significant act during his tenure, as far as we know, was to cause a serious injury to a very promising young player. Ben Paton hasn't been the same since.

Re: Roughead resigns
It was a mistake employing him...in hindsight. I say that because he wanted to dabble in all facets including the coaching, football development and football administration side of things, without specialising in any of these areas.
He had some strengths with leadership and mentoring, but I'm not really sure how the club or the team benefited from his time with us.
Next time we employ a retired player who wants to learn on the job, we should only do that if they have a passion for either the admin side or being an assistant coach, and not both. Or...
If it's an ex St Kilda player, and he helps our club to win it's second premiership, then he can do a Roughy...no problem

Thanks for the service Roughie and good luck for the future.
Any chance that Roo is going to take over? Is he still in the country?

Re: Roughead resigns
Good riddance his papers were stamped when Ross arrived.
Had a massive ego and was too involved anywhere.
One thing you saw under Ratten was Roughead and Lethlean hanging around at training snapping goals and lairising that all stopped when Ross arrived.

Re: Roughead resigns
Last year at Cairns I asked him what he was doing about Max Kings accuracy in front of goal, and if he could stop him twirling the ball during his runup.
He sai he didn't care what players did in front of goal. Inaccuracy in front of goal cost us the game and a spot in the finals.
Good riddance!

Re: Roughead resigns
Hard to define his role or how effective he was?
fist year was general footy ops
Last few years in recruiting
In all honesty
He should’ve just been a forwards assistant coach (development)

Yep. He should have stayed off the park thereby saving a severe injury to one very promising player.

Re: Roughead resigns
Hard to know what skills and insight he actually brought. Was is that he was thoroughly assessed, came up short, and decided it was better to leave than be pushed out the door?

Bassett and Lyon cleaning house leaving no stone unturned
Dalrymple probably wants his own people too and that’s ok
I never ever felt listening to Roughead that his heart was in it …always looked like a bit of work experience till he could get back to Hawks (probably got a gig already sewn up)
Anyway no big loss
Not a renowned recruiting guru or ops guy so see ya

Maybe multiple flag winning Roughead couldn't tolerate maiden performer Lyon telling him how to suck eggs!

Re: Roughead resigns
It’s funny
When
Pelchen, Rath, Ratten, Roughead
Or who ever?
Get appointed at StK
Without even starting they were/are a ‘great appointment!’
By the time they get sacked - they were/are hopeless
Everyone of those, and a lot of other past employees
Had success elsewhere
Either we put them in the wrong role or for some reason they couldn’t succeed at StK

Re: Roughead resigns
We just had a crap list. They improved on Richo but failed to appease the football gods.
So they sent Ross.

Re: Roughead resigns
I got the same impression, he appears to be quite taciturn, not big on emotion and I doubt he had the capacity to inspire players, an element that all good coaching aspirants need to possess.Teflon wrote: ↑Sun 31 Dec 2023 8:08pm Bassett and Lyon cleaning house leaving no stone unturned

He was really disappointing - I was one of many who were delighted when he was first recruited as an assistant coach in 2020.

Probably the dumbest act at a St Kilda training session and under Ratten’s and Lethlean’s watch.
Total incompetence…

Re: Roughead resigns
I have seen Enright, Goddard join in training this pre season and last year. Even Tony brown helps at times!
Sometimes assistant coaches join in for numbers at different drills if they need a body.

Re: Roughead resigns
I can't recall Roughead ever being an assistant coach. Not in any official capacity, anyway. IIRC he was hired to learn the ropes in recruitment and list management.
He seemed to dabble wherever it took his fancy. Typically, the said incident took place under Ratten's "Laissez Faire" style watch.
I doubt it would've happened under RTB's highly structured regime. Accidents do happen, but on that occasion, it seemed Roughie was acting outside his remit.

Re: Roughead resigns
Not at all - he was in the drill - they needed a tall forward - King was not training
Perhaps Paton was too slow with the footy?
That season Roughie was in footy ops. Basically doing a bit of everything- including on field/coaching.
He was on the bench match days

Re: Roughead resigns
Indeed. That season being the operative term. I stand by my claim that it wouldn't have happened under RTB.

Re: Roughead resigns
Max King did his shoulder in a training drill under Ross?
Was that the fault of his opponent that day?
Injuries happen in footy, if you’ve ever played this is understood
They can happen in games or at training - it’s a contact sport
